Best Beaches in Roatán: Which Ones Are Actually Worth Visiting?

best beaches in roatan

I’ve been traveling to Roatán for more than 20 years, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that you don’t need to spend your vacation trying to visit every beach on the island.

Some are absolutely worth making a special trip to.

Others are beautiful if you’re already nearby, but I wouldn’t necessarily give up an entire day at West Bay Beach just to say I’d been there.

And honestly, that’s an important distinction.

If you only have a week in Roatán, you probably don’t want to spend half of it sitting in taxis and driving across the island collecting beaches like they’re Pokémon. You want to know which Roatán beaches are actually worth your time.

For most first-time visitors, and if you only have one cruise ship day, my answer is pretty simple: start with West Bay Beach.

It’s the classic Roatán beach for a reason. You have beautiful water, a long stretch of sand, snorkeling right from shore, restaurants and resorts within walking distance, and you don’t need to plan an entire expedition just to spend a day at the beach. Current destination guides similarly identify West Bay as the convenient all-around choice, particularly when time is limited.

But West Bay isn’t the only beach worth knowing about.

Half Moon Bay in West End gives you a completely different experience, while Camp Bay is the kind of place to consider when you actually want to get away from the busier western side of the island.

So instead of giving you a giant list of every patch of sand I can find on Google Maps, I’m going to help you figure out which Roatán beach makes sense for the kind of day you actually want.

And I’ll tell you when I think it’s worth making a special trip—and when I don’t.

West Bay Beach

I know West Bay wins a lot of categories, and that’s not because I’m trying to be boring or prejudicial.

There’s a reason it’s Roatán’s most famous beach.

You can spend the morning snorkeling, walk back to your chair, grab lunch without getting in a car and stay until sunset. If you’re staying in West Bay, a beach day requires almost no planning at all.

That convenience matters more than you might think.

Half Moon Bay puts you right in West End, with restaurants and dive shops nearby, but it isn’t the same wide, resort-style stretch of sand you’ll find in West Bay.

West Bay Beach: Best Overall Beach in Roatán

Roatan Honduras

If I could only choose one beach in Roatán, it would be West Bay Beach.

Maybe that’s predictable, but after all of our trips to the island, I still think it’s the best combination of beautiful beach, snorkeling, restaurants and convenience.

And we’ve actually stayed here enough times to know that West Bay can feel very different depending on when you go.

Early in the morning, it’s completely different from the middle of a busy cruise-ship day. The water is quieter, there are fewer people walking the beach and it’s one of my favorite times to be out there.

Then the cruise crowds arrive.

That doesn’t mean I’d avoid West Bay on a cruise day, but if you’re staying on the island for several days, you have an advantage that cruise passengers don’t: you can choose when you go.

Current local guides describe the same pattern, with West Bay becoming busiest from late morning through mid-afternoon on heavy cruise days and getting noticeably quieter again later in the afternoon.

Where to Go on West Bay Beach

Here’s something that’s important if you’ve never been there:

West Bay Beach isn’t one little beach in front of one resort.

It’s a long stretch of sand, lined with resorts, restaurants and beach bars, and your experience can be pretty different depending on where you end up.

If snorkeling is your priority, you’ll want to be toward the end of the beach near Infinity Bay and Grand Roatán. That’s where the easiest shore access to the reef is located, with marked entry areas near both resorts. You can literally wade to it.

We’ve stayed at Infinity Bay several times, so this is the part of West Bay we’re most familiar with.

And this is where West Bay really earns its spot at the top of my list.

You don’t have to book a snorkeling excursion just to see something underwater. You can walk into the Caribbean from the beach and snorkel the reef right from shore.

Is West Bay Beach Free?

The beach itself is public, but that doesn’t mean the resort’s chairs, pools, bathrooms and other facilities are free to use.

That’s an important distinction.

If you’re staying at one of the beachfront resorts, obviously that’s easy. If you’re coming to West Bay for the day, some resorts offer day passes, and some restaurants may allow customers to use their chairs when eating or drinking there. Policies and prices can change, especially on busy cruise days, so I wouldn’t assume a particular chair or resort facility will be available for free.

What About Cruise Ship Days?

This is probably the biggest downside to West Bay.

On days when several cruise ships are in port, you will notice it.

More people. More chairs to fill. More vendors. More activity in the water.

But here’s the thing: if you’re staying in Roatán for a week, you have options.

Check the cruise schedule and make your big West Bay beach day one of the quieter days. Or get out there early before the excursion groups arrive. Later afternoon can also be much calmer once cruise passengers start heading back to their ships.

I wouldn’t skip West Bay because of cruise ships.

I’d just be smarter about when I went.

Honestly, if you’re staying at one of the resorts the busier cruise ship days aren’t a big deal. You can escape to the pool if want to avoid it.

Is West Bay Beach Worth a Special Trip?

Yes. Absolutely.

Even if you’re staying in West End, Sandy Bay or somewhere else on the island, I think West Bay deserves at least one beach day on a first trip to Roatán.

If you’re staying in West Bay already?

You’re going to understand very quickly why we keep coming back.

Best for: First-time visitors, families, snorkeling and an easy beach day
Snorkeling: Excellent from shore
Restaurants nearby: Plenty
Crowds: Can be busy, particularly on cruise days
Would I make a special trip? Yes
Would I go again? Obviously. We keep doing exactly that.

Half Moon Bay: Best Beach in West End

Half Moon Bay roatan

Half Moon Bay is the beach I’d choose if you want to spend the day in West End.

And I wouldn’t go expecting a smaller version of West Bay Beach. They’re completely different experiences.

Half Moon Bay sits right in West End, so you’re surrounded by restaurants, bars, dive shops and everything else that makes this part of Roatán fun. You can spend some time at the beach, grab lunch, wander through West End and make an entire afternoon out of it without needing a car.

That’s really the appeal for me.

The bay is protected and generally calmer than more exposed parts of the coast, and there is snorkeling accessible from shore. But if your only goal is the best beach and snorkeling experience, I’d still choose West Bay.

If your goal is beach + West End, Half Moon Bay makes much more sense.

Is Half Moon Bay Worth a Special Trip?

Yes—but I’d combine it with West End rather than traveling across the island solely to sit on this beach all day.

If you’re staying in West Bay, this is especially easy. Take the water taxi over, spend some time at Half Moon Bay, walk around West End, have lunch or dinner and take a taxi back if you stay past the time the water taxis stop running.

That’s a much better use of the trip than treating Half Moon Bay as an isolated beach destination.

Best for: Combining a beach day with West End
Snorkeling: Available from shore
Restaurants nearby: Lots
Crowds: Usually less of a resort-beach feel than West Bay
Would I make a special trip? Yes, but I’d combine it with West End
Would I choose it over West Bay for a full beach day? Probably not

And if you’re trying to decide whether you actually want to stay in West End or West Bay, this is the perfect place to internally link your Where to Stay in Roatán / West Bay vs. West End guide.

Camp Bay Beach: Best for Getting Away From the Crowds

Camp Bay is where I’d look if your idea of a perfect beach day involves fewer resorts, fewer people and a lot more space.

It’s on Roatán’s East End, and that’s important. This isn’t a beach I’d casually tack onto an afternoon in West Bay. Getting there takes some effort, particularly if you’re staying on the western side of the island.

But that’s also exactly why Camp Bay is different.

We actually visited Camp Bay as part of a snorkeling excursion and arrived by boat, which was a pretty great way to see this side of the island. It feels completely different from West Bay—far less developed, with a long stretch of beach and none of the busy resort atmosphere we’re used to on the western side.

You aren’t coming here for the convenience of West Bay.

You’re coming because you don’t want West Bay.

What to Know Before Going to Camp Bay

I’d plan this one rather than just hopping in a taxi and hoping for the best.

There aren’t rows of resorts and restaurants lining the beach, and services are much more limited than what you’ll find in West Bay or West End. I’d bring what you need for the day and have your transportation figured out before you leave. There are some restaurants and accommodations around the Camp Bay area, including Camp Bay Lodge and places around Camp Bay village, but don’t expect everything to be steps from your beach chair.

And this is one of those situations where the rental-car question we just wrote about becomes relevant.

If I were already planning to explore the East End for the day, Camp Bay would make a lot of sense to include.

If I were sitting happily at West Bay and thinking about making the trip solely because someone told me I needed to see every “best beach” in Roatán?

I wouldn’t feel obligated.

Is Camp Bay Beach Worth the Drive?

I think this depends entirely on what you’re looking for.

If you want a quieter, less-developed side of Roatán and you’re interested in seeing more of the East End, yes, this is exactly why you’d make the trip.

If you’re looking for restaurants, easy shore snorkeling, lots of amenities and everything within walking distance, I’d stay with West Bay.

That’s why I don’t really think Camp Bay and West Bay are competitors.

They’re almost opposite beach experiences.

Best for: Quiet beach days and exploring the East End
Restaurants nearby: Some options in the Camp Bay area, but far fewer than West Bay
Crowds: Generally much lighter
Getting there: Plan transportation ahead of time
Would I make a special trip? Yes, if exploring the East End is part of the day
Would I choose it over West Bay? Only if getting away from the busier side of Roatán is exactly what I wanted

Sandy Bay: Better for Snorkeling Than a Traditional Beach Day

Sandy Bay, roatan

Sandy Bay is a little different from the other beaches on this list.

If you’re picturing a wide stretch of powdery white sand lined with restaurants and beach chairs, this probably isn’t the Roatán beach I’d choose.

I’d go to West Bay for that.

What Sandy Bay does offer is a quieter, much less developed stretch of coastline with excellent access to Roatán’s reef. The shoreline varies depending on exactly where you are, and some sections have more seagrass and a much more natural feel than the manicured beach in West Bay.

And honestly, that’s part of the appeal.

Sandy Bay isn’t trying to be West Bay.

There are fewer crowds, fewer big resorts and considerably less going on along the beach. It’s also home to the Roatán Institute for Marine Sciences and Anthony’s Key Resort, so this part of the island has a strong connection to diving, snorkeling and marine life. Current Sandy Bay guides similarly emphasize the area’s quieter atmosphere and reef access rather than presenting it as a classic resort-beach destination.

Would I Go to Sandy Bay Just for the Beach?

Probably not.

If I wanted a traditional beach day with beautiful sand, easy swimming, restaurants and everything within walking distance, I’d choose West Bay.

But if I were staying in Sandy Bay, wanted somewhere quieter or was specifically interested in snorkeling, I wouldn’t overlook it.

In fact, that’s really where Sandy Bay shines.

Some of the reef sites in this area are excellent, and Sandy Bay gives you access to snorkeling without the crowds you’ll often find around West Bay.

So I wouldn’t put Sandy Bay on this list because I think everyone needs to drive over and see the beach.

I’d include it because not everyone is looking for the same kind of beach.

Best for: Quiet coastline and snorkeling
Snorkeling: Very good, although access varies by location
Restaurants nearby: More limited than West Bay or West End
Crowds: Generally much lighter
Would I make a special trip just for the beach? Probably not
Would I consider staying here for a quieter Roatán trip? Absolutely

Is Tabyana Beach the Same as West Bay Beach?

This one can be confusing, especially if you’re looking at cruise excursions and see Tabyana Beach listed like it’s another beach you need to visit.

It’s not.

Tabyana Beach is essentially a section of West Bay Beach, toward the southern end of the same stretch of sand. The Tabyana name is used heavily for cruise excursions and the Tabyana Beach day-use area, which is why it can look like a completely separate destination when you’re researching your trip. Current Roatán guides describe it the same way.

So if you’ve already spent the day at West Bay Beach, you don’t need to add Tabyana to your itinerary just so you can check another beach off your list.

You’re already there.

The difference is really how you’re accessing and using the beach. Cruise passengers often book Tabyana as an organized beach excursion that includes things like transportation, a chair and access to facilities. Someone staying on Roatán can simply visit West Bay and enjoy the same stretch of coastline without treating Tabyana as another beach entirely.

And the snorkeling people rave about at Tabyana?

That’s the same West Bay reef area we’ve already been talking about.

Bottom line: I would not count Tabyana as another beach on this list. Think of it as part of West Bay Beach rather than Beach #5.

Best Roatán Beaches for Snorkeling

snorkeling in Roatan, Honduras

If snorkeling is one of the main reasons you’re going to Roatán, West Bay Beach is my first choice—and it’s not particularly close.

We’ve spent countless hours snorkeling here over the years, and having the reef accessible directly from the beach is one of the reasons we keep coming back.

You don’t need to book a tour, get on a boat or plan your day around an excursion. Grab your mask and fins and walk into the water.

If you want more details on exactly where to go, check out my Best Snorkeling in Roatán guide.

What About Half Moon Bay and Sandy Bay?

They’re both good options, but for different reasons.

Half Moon Bay is my pick if you’re staying in West End and want easy snorkeling without traveling somewhere else. You can snorkel from shore and then walk to restaurants and everything else in West End when you’re finished.

Sandy Bay is the one I’d consider if you want something quieter.

There’s good reef access in this part of the island without the same number of people you’ll encounter at West Bay. That’s why I already rank Sandy Bay as my choice for turtles and fewer crowds in my full snorkeling guide.

My Pick?

For the combination of great snorkeling + easy access + an actual beach day, I’d choose West Bay.

If snorkeling is really important to your trip, though, don’t stop with the beaches.

Some of our favorite snorkeling experiences in Roatán involve getting out on the reef by boat on a tour. Blue Channel, for example, is one of the spots I cover in my Best Snorkeling Tours in Roatán guide.

Best Roatán Beaches for Families

best beaches in roatan for families

If you’re traveling to Roatán with kids, I’d choose West Bay Beach.

We’ve traveled to Roatán with our daughters many times, and convenience matters when you’re traveling as a family—even when your kids are older.

And if you’re staying at one of the beachfront resorts, it gets even easier.

Someone forgot their goggles? Walk back to the room.

Hungry? Go get lunch.

Done with the beach? Head to the pool.

Nobody needs to pack everything they could possibly need for the next eight hours before leaving the hotel.

FAQs About the Best Beaches in Roatán

What is the best beach in Roatán?

For most travelers, I think West Bay Beach is the best beach in Roatán. You get beautiful water, snorkeling directly from shore, plenty of restaurants and a long stretch of sand. It’s especially hard to beat if this is your first trip to the island.

Which beach in Roatán has the best snorkeling?

West Bay Beach is my favorite for snorkeling directly from the beach. The reef is easily accessible from shore, particularly toward the end of the beach near Infinity Bay and Grand Roatán.

If snorkeling is a big part of your trip, I have a separate Best Snorkeling in Roatán guide that covers more than just beaches.

Are the beaches in Roatán public?

Beaches in Honduras are generally considered public, but access and resort amenities are a separate issue. At West Bay, for example, you can use the beach without staying at one of the resorts, but that doesn’t automatically give you access to a resort’s chairs, pools, bathrooms or other facilities.

Is West Bay Beach crowded?

It can be, especially when several cruise ships are in port. But West Bay doesn’t feel the same all day. If you’re staying on Roatán, going earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon can give you a completely different experience.

What is the quietest beach in Roatán?

Camp Bay Beach is the one I’d consider if getting away from the busier western side of Roatán is your priority. Just remember that the quieter location also means fewer conveniences and a longer trip if you’re staying around West Bay or West End.

Can you walk from West Bay Beach to West End?

You can travel between West Bay and West End without a car, but I wouldn’t plan on walking the entire route as my normal transportation. The water taxi is much easier and is part of the fun.

Is Tabyana Beach different from West Bay Beach?

Not really. Tabyana is a section of West Bay Beach, and the name is commonly used for the beach area and cruise excursions there. You don’t need to plan separate visits to West Bay and Tabyana.

Do I need a rental car to visit Roatán’s beaches?

Not for West Bay or Half Moon Bay if you’re staying around West Bay or West End. Taxis and the West Bay–West End water taxi make those areas easy to reach. A rental car becomes more useful if you’re planning to explore farther across the island, including the East End.

Check out my guide: Do You Need a Rental Car in Roatán? How to Get Around the Island

Final Thoughts: You Don't Need to Visit Every Beach in Roatán

After all of our trips to Roatán, I still don’t feel the need to spend every vacation searching for a beach that’s supposedly better than West Bay.

I like West Bay.

There. I said it.

It’s beautiful, the snorkeling is fantastic, I can walk to restaurants, and I don’t have to turn going to the beach into an all-day transportation project.

I feel like I’m beating a dead horse here…

But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t explore.

Spend an afternoon in West End and stop at Half Moon Bay. Head toward Camp Bay if you want to see the quieter East End. You can actually do that pretty easily with a snorkeling tour.

Consider Sandy Bay if snorkeling and fewer crowds matter more to you than having a traditional resort beach.

Just don’t feel like you need to see all of them.

You only get so many vacation days, and I personally don’t want to spend mine collecting beaches just so I can say I’ve been there.

Sometimes the best beach in Roatán is simply the one where you’re perfectly happy staying for the afternoon.

And for me, that’s always been West Bay.
