8 Best Beachfront Hotels in Roatán: Where to Stay on the Beach

Beautiful clear turquoise waters in Roatan, perfect for snorkeling and relaxing beach days.

Not every hotel labeled a “beachfront hotel” in Roatán is actually sitting on the kind of beach you’re probably picturing. After MANY trips to the island, I’ve narrowed the list down quite a bit.

Some are on West Bay’s gorgeous stretch of sand, some have smaller private beachfronts, and a few trade the big resort feel for a quieter spot right on the water.

If you already know you want to stay on this side of the island, see my complete guide to the best places to stay in Roatán for more options and a comparison of the resorts.

Classic West Bay resort location without choosing one of the biggest names

Roatán has beachfront hotels all over the island, but the actual beach experience can be very different depending on where you stay. West Bay has the classic white-sand beach most people picture, while West End puts you closer to restaurants and nightlife, and Sandy Bay tends to be quieter. I’ve broken down each hotel below based not just on the property itself, but on what the beach and location are actually like.

Best Overall Beachfront Hotel in Roatán: Kimpton Grand Roatán Resort + Spa

best beachfront hotels in roatan

If I were choosing one beachfront hotel in Roatán for the nicest overall experience, I’d pick the Kimpton Grand Roatán. We stayed here twice, and it really is beautiful. This is an image I took from my posh lounger by the pool.

The location is a big part of why it’s our top choice. The Kimpton sits at the far end of West Bay Beach, so you get the white-sand and super-clear water West Bay is known for, but it feels a little more tucked away than the middle of the beach.

And the snorkeling here is fantastic. You can walk straight into the water from the beach and swim out toward the reef without booking a snorkeling tour. If snorkeling is high on your Roatán list, this end of West Bay is exactly where I’d want to be.

The resort itself is definitely more polished and upscale than most places we’ve stayed on the island. There are two pools, a spa and several places to eat, so you could easily spend a day here without going anywhere. That said, you’re still on West Bay Beach, which means you can walk down the sand to other restaurants and resorts when you want to get out.

I’d choose the Kimpton if: You want a true luxury beachfront resort and are willing to spend more for it.

The beach: White sand, clear Caribbean water and excellent snorkeling right from shore.

Good to know: This is one of the more expensive options on the island. If having the nicest resort isn’t particularly important to you, there are beachfront hotels in Roatán where your money will go quite a bit further.

Rooms: There’s a pretty big range here, from regular hotel rooms to suites, standalone bungalows and one-, two- and three-bedroom villa suites. Some of the larger villa suites have full kitchens and separate living areas, which is worth looking at if you’re traveling as a family or want more space.

Best Beachfront Hotel for Snorkeling: Infinity Bay Spa & Beach Resort

We’ve stayed at Infinity Bay three times, which probably tells you more than anything else I could say about it. It’s one of those places that just works really well for a Roatán vacation.

Infinity Bay sits directly on West Bay Beach, and the location is fantastic. You have the big white-sand beach right outside the resort, plenty of restaurants within walking distance, and some of the best snorkeling on the island right from shore.

The rooms here are more condo-style than traditional hotel rooms, which is one reason we’ve liked it for family trips. Having more space and a kitchen is really nice when you’re staying for several days and don’t necessarily want to eat every single meal out. Or just want a bigger space for snacks.

There’s also a huge pool running through the middle of the resort, beachfront dining and an on-site dive shop. But for me, the real reason to choose Infinity Bay is the combination of the beach, snorkeling and location. You don’t need to plan much. Walk out of your room, grab your snorkel gear and you’re basically there.

I’d choose Infinity Bay if: You want to be directly on West Bay Beach with excellent snorkeling and a little more room to spread out.

The beach: One of the best stretches of West Bay Beach, with easy access to snorkeling just offshore.

Good to know: Infinity Bay is a fairly large resort. If you’re looking for a tiny, quiet boutique hotel, this probably isn’t it. But if you want beachfront, a great pool and an easy West Bay location, there’s a reason we’ve gone back three times.

Rooms: Infinity Bay is mostly villa-style accommodations ranging from studios to three-bedroom units. They have kitchens, private balconies or patios and more living space than a typical hotel room, which is one of the reasons I think it works so well for families and longer stays.

Best Boutique Beachfront Hotel in Roatán: Arca Roatán

If the big-resort feel of the Kimpton or Infinity Bay isn’t what you’re looking for, Arca is probably the West Bay hotel I’d look at next.

I haven’t personally stayed here, so I can’t give you the same firsthand review I can with Kimpton or Infinity Bay. But I have eaten here and have seen the layout. And I’ve spent enough time on West Bay Beach to really like the location, and Arca is much smaller and more intimate than most of the resorts along this stretch.

There are only 16 accommodations, plus a saltwater pool and an on-site restaurant, Ahari. You’re still directly on West Bay Beach, so you aren’t giving up the gorgeous water or walkability that makes this area so convenient. Keep in mind that the pool is rather small and is fairly shaded by trees, if that matters to you.

This is the one I’d look at for couples or anyone who wants West Bay Beach without feeling like they’re staying at a large Caribbean resort. One important thing for families, though: Arca only accepts guests age 12 and older.

I’d choose Arca if: You want a smaller, more stylish beachfront hotel but still want to be right on West Bay Beach.

The beach: Directly on West Bay’s white-sand beach, with swimming and snorkeling right outside the hotel.

Rooms: Arca has just 16 accommodations, including Junior Suites, Luxury Suites and private villas. The villas work especially well for groups, with space for four to six guests and kitchen facilities in the two private villas.

Good to know: Guests must be 12 or older, so this isn’t the one I’d choose for families traveling with younger kids.

Best Quiet Luxury Beachfront Hotel: Ibagari Boutique Hotel

Ibagari is one I’d look at if you want something quieter and more secluded than staying right in the middle of West Bay or West End.

It’s tucked between the two, with its own beachfront setting, so this is less about walking out the door and having a dozen restaurants nearby and more about having a beautiful place to stay where you may not feel the need to leave quite as often.

I haven’t personally stayed at Ibagari, but it’s been on my radar for a while, and it is the home of one of my favorite restaurants in West Bay.

It’s definitely on the luxury end of the Roatán hotel spectrum, with a much smaller, more intimate feel than the larger West Bay resorts. There’s also an on-site dive center and Luna Muna restaurant, which makes it a good choice if you want a quieter hotel without giving up diving or a nice place to eat.

I’d choose Ibagari if: You want a quieter, upscale beachfront stay and don’t need to be in the middle of West Bay or West End.

The beach: A private beachfront setting between West Bay and West End. Don’t expect the same long, wide stretch of white sand you get on West Bay Beach—I’d choose Ibagari more for privacy and atmosphere.

Rooms: Accommodations range from ocean-view suites to a two-room villa with a private plunge pool. There are also large private residences for groups of up to eight, including beachfront options with private pools.

Good to know: The hotel accommodations are for guests 12 and older. Ibagari’s separate private homes can accommodate families and groups of all ages, so make sure you’re looking at the right type of accommodation if you’re traveling with younger kids.

Best Beachfront Hotel Near West End: Luna Beach

Luna Beach is a good one to look at if you like the idea of staying near West End but don’t necessarily want to be right in the middle of it.

The resort sits on a quieter stretch of beach just outside West End, surrounded by quite a bit of greenery. So you get more of that tucked-away Caribbean-resort feeling while still being close enough to head into West End for dinner, shopping or a night out.

I haven’t stayed at Luna Beach personally, but I like that it gives you something different from the West Bay resorts. There’s a pool with a swim-up bar, several places to eat, an on-site dive shop and a large oceanfront dock. You could easily spend plenty of time at the resort, but West End is still nearby when you want more going on.

I’d choose Luna Beach if: You want a quieter beachfront resort but still want easy access to West End.

The beach: A smaller, more secluded beach than West Bay, with an oceanfront dock and access to snorkeling and water activities.

Rooms: There are 14 boutique suites with beachfront or jungle views, including king and double-queen options. For families or larger groups, Luna Beach also has multi-bedroom private villas with full kitchens and more living space.

Good to know: Don’t choose Luna Beach expecting the big, wide white-sand beach you’ll find in West Bay. I’d choose this one for the quieter setting and proximity to West End instead.

Best Beachfront Hotel in West End: The Beach House

If you want to stay beachfront but also want restaurants, dive shops and everything going on in West End right outside your door, The Beach House is the one I’d look at.

This is a completely different experience from staying on West Bay Beach. The Beach House sits directly on Half Moon Bay, right at the entrance to West End. You can spend the day swimming or snorkeling and then walk out for dinner without worrying about a taxi or water taxi.

I haven’t stayed here personally, but I really like the location. West End is one of our favorite places to wander around, especially in the evening, and staying here would put you right in the middle of it without giving up being on the water.

The hotel itself is small, with only 14 suites, and every one faces Half Moon Bay. There’s also an on-site beachfront restaurant, Mila del Mar, and a private dock that looks like a pretty great place to catch a Roatán sunset.

I’d choose The Beach House if: You want to stay directly on the water and be able to walk to everything in West End.

The beach: Half Moon Bay is smaller and more protected than West Bay Beach. It’s good for swimming, snorkeling and paddleboarding, but don’t come here expecting the long stretch of powdery white sand you’ll find in West Bay.

Rooms: There are just 14 ocean-facing suites, ranging from rooms for two to larger suites that can sleep up to six. All overlook Half Moon Bay, and many have private balconies, porches or patios.

Good to know: You’re choosing The Beach House as much for the West End location as the beach itself. If your dream is a huge white-sand beach outside your room, I’d stay in West Bay. If you’d rather walk to restaurants, bars and dive shops while still waking up on the water, this location is hard to beat.

Best Quiet Beachfront Hotel for Snorkeling: Puerta Azul

Puerta Azul is probably the hotel on this list I’d look at if I wanted to get away from the busier parts of Roatán completely.

It’s a tiny boutique hotel in Sandy Bay, about 10 minutes from West End, with just nine accommodations spread across a one-acre property. This isn’t West Bay with a long line of resorts, restaurants and beach chairs. It’s much quieter and feels more tucked away.

I haven’t stayed at Puerta Azul, but the location is what makes me want to include it. There’s a 400-foot dock stretching out over the water with direct access to the reef, so snorkeling is a big part of the experience here. If your ideal Roatán morning involves grabbing your snorkel gear before breakfast rather than finding a beach chair, this one makes a lot of sense.

I’d choose Puerta Azul if: You want a small, quiet beachfront hotel with easy access to snorkeling and don’t care about being within walking distance of lots of restaurants and nightlife.

The beach: A small, private-feeling beachfront in Sandy Bay rather than the wide white sand of West Bay. The real attraction here is the long dock and direct access to the reef.

Rooms: There are five beachfront and sea-view suites plus four garden villas. The beachfront suites are best for couples or small groups, while the garden villas add kitchens and more space. The largest two-bedroom garden villa sleeps up to five.

Good to know: You’re about 10 minutes from West End, so I’d consider transportation when staying here. That’s also part of the appeal, though—Puerta Azul is for someone who’d rather have quiet and reef access than be right in the middle of everything.

Best Classic West Bay Beachfront Hotel: Paradise Beach Hotel

8 best beachfront hotels in Roatan

Paradise Beach Hotel is another one I’ve actually stayed at, although it’s been years—and the hotel has changed quite a bit since then.

What hasn’t changed is the location. It’s right on West Bay Beach, which means you’re getting that gorgeous white sand and turquoise water just outside the hotel. You’re also in an easy spot for walking to restaurants, other resorts and everything else along the beach.

The hotel has been renovated since my stay, so I can’t really compare today’s rooms to what we experienced years ago. From what I’ve seen of the current property, though, it has become much more polished while still feeling like one of the classic West Bay resort options.

There are pools, restaurants, a beach bar and an on-site dive center, so this is another place where you really don’t have to leave the resort unless you want to. But since you’re in West Bay, I definitely would.

I’d choose Paradise Beach if: You want a traditional West Bay beachfront resort with plenty of amenities and an easy location for exploring the rest of the beach.

The beach: Directly on West Bay Beach, with the white sand, clear water and easy access to swimming and snorkeling that make this part of Roatán so popular.

Rooms: There’s a pretty wide range now, from standard king and two-queen rooms to suites and larger two- and three-bedroom villas. Some of the larger villas have full kitchens and separate living space, which makes them worth looking at for families or groups.

Good to know: I stayed here years ago, before the hotel’s more recent renovations, so I wouldn’t consider my experience a review of the current rooms. I can vouch for the location, though—and West Bay Beach is still the biggest reason I’d consider staying here.

Which Roatán Beach Area Should You Choose?

One thing I wish more hotel lists explained is that staying “beachfront” in Roatán can mean very different things depending on where you are on the island.

If this is your first trip and the beach itself is your biggest priority, I’d probably start with West Bay. This is the Roatán beach most people picture—white sand, ridiculously clear water and some really good snorkeling right from shore. It’s also the easiest area if you want plenty of restaurants and other resorts within walking distance.

West End is what I’d choose if you want more going on around you. The beaches are smaller, but you can walk to restaurants, dive shops and bars, and it has much more of a little island-town feel. We’ve spent a lot of time in West End over the years, and I love it, but I wouldn’t choose it over West Bay if having the prettiest beach was my number-one priority.

Then there’s Sandy Bay, which is a completely different experience. It’s quieter, less developed and much more spread out. You won’t have the same walk-out-your-door-and-have-everything-right-there convenience, but that’s exactly why some people prefer it. This is where I’d look if snorkeling, diving and having a quieter place to come back to matter more than being in the middle of everything.

Area Best For Beach Experience My Take
West Bay
First trips, beach lovers, families
Long white-sand beach + excellent snorkeling
Best overall choice if the beach is your priority
West End
Restaurants, diving, nightlife, walkability
Smaller beaches and Half Moon Bay
Best if you want beachfront + things to do
Sandy Bay
Quiet stays, snorkeling, diving
Smaller, less-developed beachfront
Best if you want to get away from the crowds

If you’re still trying to decide which part of the island fits your trip, I break down a lot more than just the beaches in my Where to Stay in Roatán guide.

What Does “Beachfront” Actually Mean in Roatán?

This sounds obvious, but it’s worth pointing out: a hotel showing up when you search for a “beach hotel in Roatán” doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll walk out of your room and onto the sand.

Some hotels are a few minutes’ walk from the beach. Others sit right on the water but have an ironshore or a very small patch of sand. And then you have places like the resorts on West Bay Beach, where you’re actually staying on the big white-sand beach most people picture when they’re planning a trip to Roatán.

For this list, I tried to stick with hotels where the waterfront or beach is a real part of the reason you’d stay there—not simply hotels that happen to be close to one.

That doesn’t mean every beach on this list looks the same. If you want a long stretch of soft sand for swimming and lounging, West Bay is hard to beat. If you’d rather have a quieter waterfront, easy reef access or be able to walk into West End, one of the smaller beachfront properties may actually be a better fit.

How I’d Choose Between These Roatán Beachfront Hotels

If you’re still staring at eight hotels and wondering which one I’d actually choose, here’s how I’d narrow it down.

For a first trip to Roatán, I’d probably stay in West Bay. It’s easy, the beach is gorgeous, the snorkeling is right there and you can walk to plenty of places to eat.

If I wanted luxury, I’d choose the Kimpton Grand Roatán. It’s the nicest overall resort experience of the hotels on this list, and you still get that fantastic West Bay location.

For a family trip or a longer stay, I’d lean toward Infinity Bay. We’ve stayed there three times, and the combination of villa-style rooms, kitchens, the huge pool, beach and snorkeling makes it really easy.

If I wanted smaller and more boutique, I’d look at Arca. You still get West Bay Beach without staying at one of the larger resorts.

For a quiet couples trip, I’d compare Ibagari and Luna Beach. Neither gives you the same classic West Bay beach experience, but that’s not really the point. These are better choices if you’d rather have a quieter setting and don’t need to be surrounded by resorts.

If I wanted to walk everywhere in West End, I’d pick The Beach House. The beach is smaller, but having Half Moon Bay outside and West End right there is a pretty great combination.

And if my priority was quiet + snorkeling, I’d seriously look at Puerta Azul in Sandy Bay. It’s the least “resorty” choice on this list, which may be exactly what you’re looking for.

My shortcut: If you have no idea where to start, choose West Bay. Then decide whether you want luxury (Kimpton), more space and a great family setup (Infinity Bay), boutique (Arca) or a more traditional West Bay resort (Paradise Beach).

Before You Book a Beachfront Hotel in Roatán

A beachfront hotel sounds pretty straightforward, but there are a few things I’d check before booking—especially if this is your first trip to Roatán.

Make Sure You’re Booking the Room You Think You Are

“Beachfront hotel” and “beachfront room” are two different things. A hotel can sit directly on the beach while your room overlooks the pool, gardens or another building.

If waking up to an ocean view matters to you, look at the actual room category before paying. I wouldn’t assume every room at a beachfront resort faces the water.

Think About How Much You Want to Leave the Resort

This makes a bigger difference in Roatán than you might expect.

In West Bay, you can walk down the beach to restaurants, bars and other resorts. West End is even better if you want restaurants and dive shops within walking distance.

A quieter property in Sandy Bay can be wonderful, but you’ll probably rely more on taxis or arranged transportation when you want to go somewhere.

You Probably Don’t Need a Rental Car

We’ve never felt like a rental car was necessary for the typical Roatán vacation. Taxis and arranged transfers are easy enough, and if we’re staying in West Bay or West End, we’re walking or taking a water taxi quite a bit anyway.

If you’re planning to explore farther around the island on your own, that’s different. But I wouldn’t rent a car just because your hotel doesn’t provide one.

Bring or Rent Snorkeling Gear

If you’re choosing a beachfront hotel specifically because you want to snorkel, don’t wait until you’re standing on the beach to figure this out.

Several hotels have dive shops or gear available nearby, but we like having our own gear. Some of the best snorkeling in Roatán doesn’t require a tour at all—you can literally walk into the water from the beach.

Don’t Forget About Sand Flies

This is one of those very unglamorous Roatán details nobody wants to talk about while showing you pictures of turquoise water.

Sand flies—or no-see-ums—can be annoying, particularly around dawn and dusk. Bring insect repellent and actually use it. I wouldn’t let this keep me from booking a beachfront hotel for a second, but I also wouldn’t arrive without bug spray.

Check What’s Included Before Comparing Prices

Two beachfront hotels that look similarly priced can end up costing very different amounts once you factor in breakfast, airport transfers, resort fees, activities and transportation.

I’d compare the total trip cost, not just the nightly room rate. And if one hotel costs a little more but lets you walk everywhere, snorkel from shore and skip renting a car, that can change the math pretty quickly.

FAQs About Beachfront Hotels in Roatán

What is the best beachfront hotel in Roatán?

If I had to choose one overall, I’d pick Kimpton Grand Roatán for the combination of luxury, West Bay Beach and excellent snorkeling right from shore. If you want more space or are traveling as a family, Infinity Bay would be my other top choice. We’ve stayed at both, and I’d happily return to either one.

What part of Roatán has the best beach hotels?

West Bay has the largest concentration of traditional beachfront resorts and the beach most people picture when they think of Roatán. It’s where you’ll find Kimpton Grand Roatán, Infinity Bay, Arca and Paradise Beach. If the actual beach is your number-one priority, this is where I’d start.

What are the best beachfront hotels in Roatán for snorkeling?

Kimpton Grand Roatán and Infinity Bay are my top choices if you want the combination of a great beach and snorkeling directly from shore. Puerta Azul is another interesting option if you’d rather have a quieter Sandy Bay setting with reef access from its long dock.

Is West Bay or West End better for a beachfront hotel?

Choose West Bay if you want the classic white-sand beach, resort amenities and easy shore snorkeling. Choose West End if you’d rather have a smaller beach but be able to walk to restaurants, bars and dive shops. For a first Roatán trip focused on the beach, I’d choose West Bay.

Are there beachfront hotels in Roatán that are good for families?

Yes. Infinity Bay is my favorite of these for families because its villa-style accommodations give you more room and kitchen facilities, plus there’s a large pool and you’re directly on West Bay Beach. Paradise Beach also has larger villa options. Keep in mind that Arca and Ibagari’s hotel accommodations have age restrictions, so check the current policies if you’re traveling with younger children.

Do I need a car if I stay at a beachfront hotel in Roatán?

Usually not. If you’re staying in West Bay or West End, you can walk to quite a bit and use taxis or water taxis when you want to go farther. A car may be more useful at a quieter property outside those areas, but we’ve never considered one essential for a typical Roatán beach vacation.

Final Thoughts: Choosing the Best Beachfront Hotel in Roatán

Roatán is one of those places where I think staying on the beach is absolutely worth it. We’ve been coming to the island for years, and some of my favorite memories are the simplest ones—walking out in the morning and seeing that blue water, snorkeling straight from shore, or wandering down the beach to figure out where we’re eating dinner.

If this is your first trip and you’re having trouble deciding, I’d make it easy and start with West Bay. Choose the Kimpton if you want luxury, Infinity Bay if you want more space and a great all-around setup, Arca if you’d rather have something smaller and boutique, or Paradise Beach for a more traditional West Bay resort.

But West Bay isn’t the only way to do a beachfront trip. The Beach House puts you right in West End, while Ibagari, Luna Beach and Puerta Azul make more sense if you’d rather trade the big beach-resort atmosphere for something quieter.

There really isn’t one beachfront hotel that’s best for everybody. The trick is figuring out what you want outside your door: the prettiest beach, the best snorkeling, restaurants you can walk to, or somewhere quiet enough that you don’t particularly care about leaving.

And if you’re still piecing together the rest of your vacation, head over to my Plan a Trip to Roatán guide next. It walks you through where to stay, getting to the island, things to do, restaurants and the other details that are much easier to figure out before you arrive.
