If you’re planning a family trip to Roatán, here’s the good news: there really aren’t many bad places to stay.
The challenge isn’t finding a decent hotel. It’s finding the right hotel for your family.
Some families want a large resort with a huge pool and plenty of amenities. Others want to spend every waking hour snorkeling. And if your kids are anything like mine, proximity to the beach can matter far more than fancy lobby furniture.
After staying at several resorts in Roatán with our daughters, these are the family-friendly resorts I’d feel comfortable recommending to my own friends and family.

My quick pick: For most families, I’d choose Infinity Bay. If budget isn’t a concern and you want something more luxurious, I’d choose Kimpton Grand Roatán. And if your family is coming primarily to dive, Bananarama makes the most sense.
How Much Should You Budget for a Family Resort in Roatán?
Roatán has a pretty wide range of hotel prices, and what you’ll spend really depends on what kind of vacation you want. You can keep things fairly reasonable with a smaller hotel, spend more for the space and convenience of a condo-style resort, or go all-out with one of the luxury properties on West Bay.
For our family, I don’t automatically think the most expensive option is the best option. Infinity Bay is a good example. Having more space, a kitchen, a huge pool, and the ability to walk everywhere can be more useful on a family trip than some of the extras you’re paying for at a luxury hotel.
Kimpton Grand Roatán is the splurge. It’s noticeably more polished, the rooms and resort are beautiful, and it feels like a true luxury vacation. I loved staying there, but you’re definitely paying for that experience.
Mayan Princess is a little different because you can book an all-inclusive package. That can make budgeting easier if your family likes knowing most of the major vacation expenses are handled before you arrive. Just remember that West Bay has plenty of restaurants within walking distance, so I don’t personally think you need an all-inclusive here. Mayan Princess currently offers family all-inclusive packages and a variety of family-size villas and suites.
And if keeping the hotel cost down means you have more money for diving, snorkeling tours, and actually exploring Roatán? I’m completely on board with that. The best family resort isn’t necessarily the most expensive one—it’s the one that fits how your family actually vacations.

Good to Know Before You Book
One thing that makes choosing a hotel in West Bay easier is that the differences between these resorts are smaller than many first-time visitors expect.
All of the hotels on this list:
- Sit directly on West Bay Beach
- Have on-site restaurants
- Are within walking distance of numerous other restaurants, beach bars, dive shops, and activities
- Offer easy access to some of the best snorkeling in Roatán
- Allow you to enjoy the island without renting a car
In other words, you’re not choosing between a “good” location and a “bad” location.
You’re choosing between different vacation styles.
Do you want a luxury resort? Kimpton.
A large family-friendly resort with spacious accommodations? Infinity Bay.
A more dive-focused atmosphere? Bananarama.
That’s why I’d spend less time worrying about which hotel has the absolute best beach and more time thinking about how your family likes to travel.
Because the truth is, all of these resorts give you access to the thing most people come to Roatán for: beautiful water, a fantastic beach, and an incredible reef sitting just offshore.
Infinity Bay Beach Resort
Best Overall Family Resort in Roatán
If someone asked me where most families should stay in Roatán, this would probably be my answer.
Infinity Bay sits directly on West Bay Beach, which means you’re steps from one of the island’s best stretches of sand and some of the easiest snorkeling in Roatán. The beach is calm, the water is clear, and it’s one of those rare places where both kids and adults tend to be equally happy.
One of the biggest advantages for families is the amount of space. Many of the units are condo-style suites with kitchens, living areas, and multiple bedrooms. After a few days of sharing a standard hotel room with your kids, wet swimsuits, sandy flip-flops, half-empty bags of snacks, and whatever mysterious treasures they collected from the beach, that extra space starts feeling like a gift from the travel gods.
The large resort pool is another reason Infinity Bay works so well for families. Some kids want to snorkel all day. Others want to spend six straight hours in the pool making friends with random children they met approximately four minutes ago and will probably never see again. Infinity Bay somehow keeps both groups happy.
And then there’s the location. You’re right on West Bay Beach, which means you can easily bounce between the pool, the beach, lunch, snorkeling, and back again without turning every outing into a family expedition worthy of a National Geographic documentary. It’s within walking distance to loads of restaurants, dive shops, beach bars, and water activities, so you don’t need to spend your vacation arranging transportation.

Families who want the classic Roatán vacation with the best balance of beach access, snorkeling, pool time, and convenience.
Skip If
You want the most luxurious resort on the island or a quiet boutique experience.
My Take
If I were planning a family trip to Roatán tomorrow and didn’t have a specific reason to stay somewhere else, this is probably where I’d book. In fact, we’ve chosen Infinity Bay for three separate family trips.
Is it the fanciest resort on the island? No.
Is it the most romantic? Also no.
But if you asked me which resort has the fewest opportunities for vacation regret, Infinity Bay would be at the top of the list.
It’s also the resort I’d feel most comfortable recommending to a friend who’s never been to Roatán before.
The beach is fantastic, the snorkeling is easy, the pool is big enough to keep kids entertained, and the condo-style units make family travel significantly less chaotic. That’s a pretty hard combination to beat.

Kimpton Grand Roatán
Best Luxury Family Resort
If budget isn’t your biggest concern, Kimpton Grand Roatán is the nicest family-friendly resort I’d consider booking on the island. I’ve stayed here since the transition from Grand Roatán to Kimpton, and the transformation is impressive.
The first thing you’ll notice is that everything feels just a little more polished. The rooms are beautiful, the grounds are immaculate, and the overall experience feels elevated without being stuffy. It’s luxury, but it’s still Roatán. Nobody is judging you for showing up to dinner with salty hair and flip-flops. At least nobody said anything to me.
The beachfront location is excellent, putting you directly on West Bay Beach with easy access to some of the island’s best snorkeling. You get the same gorgeous water everyone comes to Roatán for, but with a resort that feels noticeably more upscale than many of its neighbors. It is very, very nice.
One thing I appreciate about Kimpton is that it manages to work for both adults and kids. Some luxury resorts make families feel like they’re quietly inconveniencing everyone around them. Kimpton doesn’t have that vibe. Families are welcome, but it still feels sophisticated enough that parents can enjoy themselves too.
And let’s be honest: sometimes family vacations aren’t really vacations unless the parents get to relax a little as well.

Families celebrating a special occasion, milestone trip, graduation, anniversary, or simply wanting the nicest overall resort experience in Roatán.
Skip If
You’re trying to maximize value, need a full kitchen, or would rather spend the difference on diving, excursions, and extra beach cocktails.
My Take
If I were planning a “this isn’t just another vacation” trip, this is where I’d stay.
Would my practical side choose Infinity Bay for most family trips? Probably.
Would my “vacation fantasy” self choose Kimpton? Absolutely.
The resort feels fresh, modern, and luxurious without losing what makes Roatán special. You still have easy beach access, incredible snorkeling, and that laid-back island atmosphere, but you get to enjoy it from one of the nicest resorts on the island.
If you’re celebrating something special, this is the hotel I’d book.

Bananarama Dive & Beach Resort
Best for Diving Families
If scuba diving is one of the main reasons you’re visiting Roatán, Bananarama deserves a serious look.
In fact, Bananarama was the very first place we stayed when we visited Roatán more than 20 years ago, back when West Bay looked very different than it does today.
Unlike some resorts where diving feels like an add-on activity, diving is part of the culture here. The on-site dive operation makes it incredibly easy to roll out of bed, grab breakfast, and head straight to the boat without coordinating transportation or bouncing around the island.
That’s a bigger advantage than it might sound. Anyone who’s traveled with divers knows that simplifying logistics can make the entire trip more enjoyable.
The resort itself is casual, laid-back, and focused on what matters most to divers: a great location, easy beach access, and quick access to some of the best diving in the Caribbean.
And while Bananarama isn’t the most luxurious resort on West Bay, it’s one of the places that feels most connected to what made Roatán famous in the first place.

Families who dive or are planning to learn.
Skip If
You’re looking for a luxury resort experience or to spend more time at the pool than in the water because there is no pool.

Our family tends to choose Roatán because we love being in the water, and Bananarama leans into that lifestyle more than almost any other resort on West Bay.
You’re not paying for fancy luxury touches. This place is more on the rustic side.
You’re paying for easy access to what makes Roatán special.
And for diving families, that’s often the better investment.

Other Family-Friendly Hotels Worth Considering
There are plenty of other family-friendly hotels in Roatán. These are the ones I’d research further if the three resorts above didn’t fit my travel style or budget. I haven’t personally stayed at these properties, so I don’t feel comfortable ranking them above the resorts I’ve actually experienced.
Mayan Princess
Popular All-Inclusive Option on West Bay
Honestly, in Roatan, I don’t feel an all-inclusive is necessary. I personally prefer exploring the many restaurants within walking distance along the beach. That part is fun for me.
But if your family loves the idea of having meals, drinks, and beach time all in one place, I can absolutely see the appeal. While I generally prefer exploring local restaurants, not everyone wants to spend vacation deciding where to eat three times a day.
If your goal is to completely unplug and stop making decisions for a week, Mayan Princess is one of the easiest recommendations in Roatán.
I also completely understand the appeal of walking back from the beach, grabbing dinner without opening Google Maps, and never once discussing where to eat.
For families who want maximum relaxation and minimum planning, Mayan Princess does a lot of things right.
Splash Inn
This is a popular, budget-friendly choice in West End.
Splash Inn won’t win any luxury awards.
What it does offer is value.
Located in West End, it’s within walking distance of restaurants, dive shops, and some of the island’s best local atmosphere.
If you’re trying to keep costs reasonable while still enjoying Roatán, this is one of the better options.
I’d especially consider Splash Inn if your kids are older, you’re comfortable without a large resort pool, and you’d rather spend your money on diving, excursions, and meals than on a luxury resort.
Beach House Boutique Hotel
This is a well-reviewed boutique property in West End.
For families who prefer smaller hotels over large resorts, Beach House offers a completely different experience.
The location in West End makes it easy to walk to restaurants and activities, while the smaller scale creates a more relaxed atmosphere.
This option makes the most sense for families with older teens rather than young children. West End has a more walkable village feel and less of the traditional beach-resort atmosphere you’ll find in West Bay.
Where Should Families Stay in Roatán?
For most families visiting Roatán for the first time, I’d choose West Bay. The beach is calm, the snorkeling is right offshore, and you can walk to restaurants, dive shops, and other resorts without needing to pile everyone into a taxi every time you want to go somewhere. You also really don’t need a rental car if you’re staying along West Bay Beach.
West End is my pick for families with older kids or teens. It feels more like a little village than a resort area, with restaurants, shops, dive centers, and plenty going on within walking distance. There’s also a water taxi between West End and West Bay, so it’s easy to visit both.
Sandy Bay is worth considering if you want something quieter. You’ll find smaller properties and dive-focused stays here, but you give up some of the walk-out-your-door convenience that makes West Bay and West End so easy for a first family trip.
There are also beautiful resorts elsewhere on the island, including more secluded properties around Pristine Bay and farther east. I’d consider those if the resort itself is the vacation and you’re looking for privacy. For our family, though, I prefer being on the western side of the island where we can easily get to restaurants, snorkeling, diving, and everything else we tend to do.

What Families Should Know Before Booking a Roatán Resort
A family trip to Roatán is actually pretty easy once you know a few things ahead of time. Most of the decisions come down to where you stay and how your family likes to vacation.
You probably don’t need a rental car. If you stay in West Bay or West End, restaurants, dive shops, and plenty of activities are within walking distance. We’ve never felt like we needed a car just to enjoy our vacation. For trips elsewhere on the island, we use taxis or arrange transportation.
You don’t need an all-inclusive either. This one surprises people. West Bay has restaurants and beach bars all along the beach, and West End has even more choices. I actually like leaving the resort for dinner, so an all-inclusive has never been a priority for us. I honestly feel like we spend less money if we don’t do all-inclusive. There are plenty of days where our breakfast is small or we skip lunch and with an all-inclusive, you’re paying for that even if you’re not participating. However, if your idea of vacation is making as few decisions as humanly possible, I completely understand the appeal.
Think about room setup, not just the resort. This matters more with kids than I used to realize. A condo-style setup with separate bedrooms, bathrooms, a living area, and a kitchen can be a lifesaver on a longer trip. It’s one of the reasons we’ve returned to Infinity Bay more than once.
If your family wants to snorkel, location matters. One of the best things about staying on West Bay Beach is how easy it is to get in the water. You don’t necessarily have to book an excursion every time your kids want to snorkel. Some days it’s really nice to grab your gear, walk out to the beach, and go.
Book the resort that matches what you’ll actually do. If everyone wants a big pool and easy beach days, prioritize that. If you’re going to spend most of the week diving, paying considerably more for a luxury resort may not make sense. And if this is a special trip and you want the hotel to be part of the experience? That’s when I’d splurge on Kimpton.
After taking our daughters to Roatán multiple times, that’s probably my biggest piece of advice: don’t choose the hotel with the longest amenities list. Choose the one that will make your particular family’s vacation easier.
If I Were Booking Roatán Today

For Most Families: Infinity Bay
This is the easiest recommendation on the island.
The beachfront location is fantastic, the pool is large enough to keep kids entertained for hours, and the condo-style accommodations make family travel significantly easier. Add in the easy snorkeling, walkable location, and family-friendly atmosphere, and it’s hard to find many weaknesses.
If you’re visiting Roatán for the first time and don’t want to overthink it, I’d book Infinity Bay.
If Money Wasn't a Factor: Kimpton Grand Roatán
Kimpton is where I’d stay if I wanted the nicest overall resort experience on the island.
The rooms are beautiful, the service is excellent, and everything feels just a little more polished. You still get the same incredible beach and reef that make West Bay special, but with a noticeably more upscale experience.
If you’re celebrating a milestone, anniversary, graduation, or simply want to splurge a little, this is the hotel I’d choose.
If Diving Was the Main Goal: Bananarama
If my family’s primary reason for visiting Roatán was diving, I’d stay at Bananarama.
The on-site dive operation makes everything easy, and the entire resort feels built around the things divers care about most: quick access to the water, easy logistics, and a laid-back atmosphere.
It’s not the fanciest hotel on the island, but for diving families, it might be the smartest choice.
Final Thoughts
For most families, I’d book Infinity Bay without much hesitation.
Kimpton is the upgrade if you want luxury.
Bananarama is the choice if diving is the reason you’re coming to Roatán.
The good news is that there really isn’t a wrong answer here. All three put you directly on West Bay Beach with easy access to restaurants, snorkeling, and the beautiful Caribbean water that keeps bringing us back year after year.
