Best Time to Visit Roatán: Weather, Rainy Season & When I’d Go

best time to visit roatan

I’ve been to Roatán more than 15 times, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that you shouldn’t panic when you look at the weather forecast.

Seriously.

You can obsessively check the forecast for weeks before your trip, see rain every single day and immediately start imagining the very expensive tropical vacation you’re about to spend sitting inside your hotel room.

Been there, done that. Let’s be honest, kind of still do to an extent.

BUT, Roatán weather doesn’t always work that way. A rainy forecast can mean a quick shower followed by sunshine—or it can actually mean a full-on tropical downpour. And there are definitely times of year when I’d be more hesitant to book a trip.

For most travelers, I think the best time to visit Roatán is from March through August, with April and May being especially good months if weather is your biggest concern. April and May are typically the driest months on the island, while October through December bring considerably more rain.

My family has visited in February, March, May and July and we’ve never been washed out.

But here’s the interesting part: the “best” month really depends on why you’re going.

If you’re coming to lie on West Bay Beach all week, I’d choose differently than someone planning to scuba dive every day. And if you’re trying to save money and don’t mind taking a little bit of a gamble with the weather, there’s another time I’d consider.

After all of our trips, here’s when I’d go to Roatán, when I’d probably avoid it, and what the weather is actually like throughout the year.

QUICK ANSWER: WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT ROATÁN?

Best overall: March–May
Driest months: April–May
Best for diving: Spring through summer
Warmest water: Summer into early fall
Rainiest period: October–December
My pick for a first trip: April or May

Roatán stays warm year-round, so there’s really no “cold” season. The bigger difference between months is rain, wind and water conditions—not temperature.

And remember, Roatán is a lush, green, tropical island. It needs the rain to be what it is. We just prefer it to happen when we aren’t on vacation.

One thing that surprised me about Roatán: rainy season doesn’t mean that it’s cool. It’s still tropical and warm—it just means your chances of getting significant rain are higher.

The Roatán Tourism Bureau describes the island as having two main seasons, with the rainy season beginning around October and extending into January. It also notes that rain can sometimes be scattered showers, although prolonged rain is possible during the wettest part of the year.

My Favorite Time to Visit Roatán

If I were planning a first trip and could choose any time of year, I’d look at March, April or May first.

April and May are typically Roatán’s driest months, which makes them especially appealing if your plans involve spending most of your vacation outside—which, let’s be honest, is pretty much the entire point of going to Roatán.

However, March brings the Spring Break crowd (me included). So, it will be busier, but not remotely enough to deter me from going.

There’s another advantage to this time of year, though.

Roatán’s busiest cruise season generally runs from November through April, and West Bay and West End receive a large share of those visitors. That means May has an interesting little sweet spot: historically drier weather, but you’re moving beyond the heart of cruise season.

And if you’ve read any of my other Roatán guides, you already know how I feel about cruise ship days in West Bay.

The beach can feel completely different.

We’ve been there when it’s busy and we’ve been there when it’s quiet, and I’d choose the quiet version every single time.

My pick?

👉 Late April into May would probably be my first choice, if we are talking about strictly weather-wise. Personally, I’ve always traveled in February, March and July and never had a rain out.

But—and this is important—I wouldn’t limit a Roatán vacation to those months. We’ve traveled here many times, and there are good reasons to visit during summer too.

When Is Rainy Season in Roatán?

Roatán’s rainy season generally runs from October through January, with October, November and December receiving the most precipitation. April and May, by comparison, are typically the driest months.

But I think the phrase rainy season can make things sound worse than they necessarily are.

This is a tropical island. Rain happens.

A rainy day in Roatán doesn’t automatically mean you’ll wake up to gray skies and spend the entire day sitting in your hotel room. Some rain comes as scattered showers that move through fairly quickly. That said, during the wettest part of the year, Roatán can get stretches of more persistent rain, so I wouldn’t completely dismiss rainy season either.

Does It Rain All Day in Roatán?

Sometimes it can.

But not every rainy-season day looks like that.

That’s why I wouldn’t cancel plans because your weather app shows rain every day of your trip. Tropical forecasts have a way of looking absolutely horrifying from home. My husband has to be talked off a ledge in the weeks leading up to our trips.

I’d pay much more attention to the overall weather pattern once you’re there.

And if you’re coming primarily to scuba dive, wind and sea conditions can matter just as much as rain. Local dive operators often move to more protected dive sites when conditions change, and diving continues throughout the year. And, as long as it isn’t lightning, rain won’t stop you from diving.

Would I Visit Roatán During Rainy Season?

Honestly, probably not.

That’s not because Roatán isn’t beautiful during rainy season or because you’re guaranteed to have terrible weather. You could absolutely visit and have plenty of sunshine.

But vacation time is precious.

If I only have so many days for vacation and I really want to have a tropical get-away, I don’t want to spend the weeks leading up to it obsessively checking the weather or wondering whether rain is going to interfere with the things I came all that way to do.

And in Roatán, almost everything I love involves being outside—the beach, snorkeling, scuba diving, boat trips, walking to dinner and sitting by the water.

So, if my vacation dates were not flexible and I knew I the only time I could travel to Roatán would be during its rainiest months, I’d probably choose another tropical destination where it wasn’t rainy season.

That’s especially true for a first trip.

We’ve been to Roatán a lot, so if we lost a day or two to bad weather, I’d be disappointed, but I’ve also already experienced the island at its best. If this were my one big tropical vacation of the year and my first time visiting? I’d want to give myself the best odds possible.

Does that mean you shouldn’t visit Roatán from October through December? No. Plenty of people go and have wonderful trips.

But would I personally choose those months if I had other options? No.

I’d save Roatán for a time of year when the weather historically gives me better odds and choose somewhere else for that particular vacation.

What Is the Best Time to Visit Roatán for Scuba Diving?

Roatán has diving throughout the year, but local dive operators point to summer—especially July through September—as a particularly good period for diving because calmer seas can produce excellent visibility and make more dive sites accessible. Spring is also typically drier, with water temperatures beginning to rise.

We’ve done seven dives on a single Roatán trip, so this is one of the reasons I wouldn’t automatically tell everyone that April or May is the only time they should visit.

If diving is the main reason you’re going, I’d seriously consider summer.

The water is warm, conditions can be beautifully calm, and honestly, there are few things better than getting on a dive boat in Roatán in the morning knowing you’re about to spend the next hour on that reef.

Best Time to Visit Roatán for Snorkeling and Beach Weather

If your Roatán vacation is mostly about West Bay Beach, snorkeling, soaking up some blissful vitamin D and spending as much time in the water as possible, I’d aim for the drier part of the year.

For me, March through May is the sweet spot, with April and May especially appealing. Those months tend to have less rain, and drier conditions can also mean better underwater visibility because there’s less runoff entering the water.

And snorkeling in Roatán isn’t something you necessarily have to book a boat tour to enjoy. However, we’ve also done several snorkeling tours and loved getting to explore spots that aren’t as easy to reach from shore. If you want to know more about those tours, see my Best Snorkeling Tours in Roatán guide.

But one of my favorite things about West Bay is that you can literally walk into the water from the beach and snorkel. The reef is right there. We’ve spent hours doing exactly that.

If snorkeling is a big reason you’re considering Roatán, read my Best Snorkeling in Roatán guide. I break down where we actually snorkel and what you can expect.

What About Summer?

I’ve never hesitated to visit Roatán in the summer.

We’ve literally had a spring break trip to Roatán go down the toilet because our flights were canceled due to snowstorms and other bad weather. So when that happened, we immediately rescheduled for July.

No, we weren’t getting our winter getaway, but we enjoy Roatán so much that visiting in July is just as wonderful for us.

FYI: Please buy trip insurance. I’ve learned this one the hard way. If a canceled or delayed flight causes you to miss part of your trip, what the airline covers and what your hotel will refund can be two completely different things. Depending on your bookings and coverage, you could end up eating some of those costs. A couple hundred dollars is worth protecting thousands.

Protect thyself, my friend.

In fact, June through August can be really good months for a family trip, especially if you’re working around school schedules.

It’s hotter, but you’re going to a Caribbean island. I’m personally not traveling to Roatán hoping I’ll need a cardigan.

Summer can also bring beautifully calm water. Local dive operators specifically point to summer’s lower winds and calmer seas as a reason July through September can produce excellent underwater conditions.

So if your only opportunity to visit is summer vacation, I wouldn’t feel like you’re settling for the “wrong” time of year.

I’d go.

One Exception: Semana Santa

There’s one period I’d pay attention to if you’re considering an April trip: Semana Santa (Holy Week).

It’s a major holiday period in Honduras, and Roatán can become significantly busier as travelers from the mainland head to the Bay Islands. West Bay in particular can be much more crowded during that week.

So when I say April is one of my favorite months weather-wise, I don’t necessarily mean I’d choose Easter week.

If I had flexibility, I’d take that gorgeous April weather without the Semana Santa crowds.

When Is the Cheapest Time to Visit Roatán?

If you’re looking strictly at price, September through November is generally one of the cheapest times to visit Roatán.

There’s a reason for that.

This overlaps with the beginning of Roatán’s rainy season, and October, November and December are historically the island’s wettest months. Fewer travelers are willing to gamble on the weather, so you may find lower hotel rates and better availability.

Some Roatán hotels actually publish separate low-season rates during this period. For example, Las Rocas in West Bay lists lower rates from mid-September into November, while other island properties use similar seasonal pricing.

But here’s where I’m going to contradict the bargain hunter in me.

I wouldn’t choose the rainiest time of year just to save money on the hotel.

If I’m spending money on airfare, taking vacation days and traveling all the way to Honduras for a tropical vacation, I’d rather pay a little more and give myself better odds of having the weather I came for.

Especially on a first trip.

The Better Value Sweet Spot

If you’re trying to balance price AND weather, I’d look really hard at May.

April and May are historically Roatán’s driest months, and May can fall into lower-season pricing at some hotels after the winter high season ends.

And don’t automatically assume summer means you’ll pay a fortune.

Last July, we stumbled into one of the best hotel deals we’ve ever found, and it had nothing to do with July being a particularly cheap time to visit Roatán.

It was through our credit card benefits.

We booked the Kimpton Grand Roatán through the American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts program, and between the credit card benefits and what was included with our stay, the value was kind of ridiculous.

That’s why I always check more than just the nightly hotel rate. Credit card hotel programs, points, included breakfast, resort credits and other perks can completely change which hotel is actually the better deal.

Sometimes the cheapest room isn’t the best value—and sometimes a hotel that looks expensive at first ends up being the better deal once you add everything up.

That’s the kind of deal I like.

I’m not necessarily looking for the absolute cheapest week of the year. I’m looking for the week where I can potentially pay less without sacrificing the reason I’m going to Roatán in the first place.

Give me a good hotel rate, sunshine, warm water and fewer crowds.

That’s my version of a bargain.

What About Hurricane Season in Roatán?

Technically, you need to pay attention to hurricane season, which runs from June 1 through November 30.

However, Roatán sits considerably farther south than many of the Caribbean islands people typically associate with hurricanes.

Direct hurricane strikes are relatively uncommon, although Honduras and the Bay Islands can still experience tropical storms, heavy rain, wind and rough seas from systems moving through the region.

So would hurricane season stop me from visiting Roatán?

No—not by itself.

We’ve traveled to Roatán during the summer, and I’d happily do it again.

What would make me hesitate is when hurricane season overlaps with Roatán’s rainiest months later in the fall. At that point, I’m adding another weather variable to a trip that’s already more likely to encounter rain.

And as I said earlier, I only have so many vacation days. I’m not interested in collecting weather risks like they’re Pokémon. There’s no award for gambling with the few vacation days you have.

For a June, July or August trip? I personally wouldn’t let the words hurricane season scare me away from Roatán.

For October or November? I’d probably choose somewhere else.

Should You Buy Travel Insurance for Roatán?

You already know my answer to this one.

Yes.

And not just because of hurricanes.

Our own Roatán trip was disrupted by winter weather in the United States, not bad weather in Honduras. That’s an important reminder that your destination isn’t the only place where weather can derail a trip.

Flights can be canceled. Connections can be missed. Weather can happen at your departure airport, your connecting airport or your destination.

If you’re buying travel insurance specifically because you’re concerned about tropical weather, buy it before a storm becomes a known event and read the policy carefully.

Coverage varies significantly between policies, and buying insurance after a storm has already been named generally won’t give you the same protection for that event.

Also, before buying insurance, check your credit card benefits. Some cards automatically provide travel insurance when you reserve/purchase travel through them.

So, When Would I Visit Roatán?

If I had completely open dates, I’d choose April or May.

You have a good chance of dry weather, warm water, beautiful beach days and the kind of conditions that make me want to spend basically every waking hour outside.

But those aren’t the only months I’d visit.

We’ve traveled to Roatán during the summer and loved it.

So if you’re working around school schedules or summer vacation, I wouldn’t think twice about June, July or August.

Where I’d be more hesitant is October through December.

Could you have a gorgeous week? Absolutely. But those are historically some of Roatán’s rainiest months, and if I’m using precious vacation days for a tropical trip, I’d rather stack the weather odds in my favor.

Maybe that’s because I’ve reached the point in life where vacation time feels far too valuable to spend staring out a hotel window saying, “Well…at least it’s warm.”

I’d rather visit Roatán when I have a better chance of doing the things I actually came here to do.

Snorkel. Dive. Sit on West Bay Beach. Eat dinner by the water. And repeatedly say, “Why don’t we just live here?”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best month to visit Roatán?

If I could choose just one month, I’d probably pick May. It’s typically one of the drier months, the busy winter season is winding down, and you may find better hotel rates than during peak season. April would be a very close second, although I’d avoid Semana Santa if crowds bother you.

What is the rainy season in Roatán?

Roatán’s rainy season generally runs from October through January, with October, November and December among the wetter months. That doesn’t mean it rains all day every day, but there’s a greater chance of prolonged rain during this part of the year.

What are the worst months to visit Roatán?

I wouldn’t call any month truly bad, but October through December wouldn’t be my first choice for a tropical vacation. Those months tend to receive more rain, and I’d rather give myself better odds of sunny beach and water days.

Is July a good time to visit Roatán?

Yes. We’ve visited in July and would happily do it again. It’s hot and tropical, but summer can bring calm seas and beautiful conditions for snorkeling and diving. It’s also a very practical time for families who have to plan around school schedules.

Does it rain all day during rainy season in Roatán?

Not necessarily. Some days may have passing tropical showers followed by sunshine, while other weather systems can bring longer periods of rain. That’s part of the gamble with visiting during the wetter months.

When is hurricane season in Roatán?

The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 through November 30. That doesn’t mean you should automatically avoid Roatán all summer, but tropical weather is something to consider when planning a trip during those months.

What is the best time to snorkel in Roatán?

I’d look at March through May if snorkeling is one of your biggest priorities. The drier weather can mean less runoff and clearer water, although Roatán offers snorkeling throughout the year and summer can also bring wonderfully calm conditions.

What is the best time to scuba dive in Roatán?

You can scuba dive in Roatán year-round, but spring through summer can be especially appealing. Summer often brings warm water and calmer seas, which is one reason I wouldn’t hesitate to plan a July or August trip if diving were a major part of the vacation.
