Hotel vs Airbnb vs VRBO in Vienna: Which Is Better for Your Trip?

Hotel vs Airbnb in Vienna

I’ll admit it—I can spend way too much time comparing hotels.

I’ll have twenty tabs open, zoom in on Google Maps, read reviews, compare photos, and somehow convince myself that one hotel has better pillows than another.

If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably done the same thing.

The funny thing is, after our trip to Vienna, I realized I’d been focusing on the wrong decision.

We actually stayed in an apartment because we were traveling with our two teenage daughters and wanted more space. It worked perfectly for our family.

But looking back, I barely remember the apartment itself.

What I remember is walking out the front door every morning, grabbing coffee near St. Stephen’s Cathedral, and wandering Vienna until we stumbled across something unexpected.

That’s when I realized something.

For most trips, where you stay matters far more than whether you book a hotel or a vacation rental.

That said, the right choice does depend on your trip.

If I were traveling to Vienna solo or as a couple, I’d probably choose a hotel—especially for a shorter trip. But if you’re traveling with kids or as a family, I’d seriously consider a vacation rental. That’s what worked for us on our first trip, and we’re actually choosing an apartment again when we return to Vienna next summer.

For me, it really comes down to how you’re traveling—and then finding the best location within that choice.

Here’s how I’d decide.

When I’d Choose a Hotel in Vienna

If I were traveling to Vienna solo or as a couple, I’d probably choose a hotel—especially for a shorter trip. You don’t really need all the extra space of an apartment, and I like the convenience of having a front desk, easy check-in and housekeeping.

There are also some fantastic hotels right in the center of Vienna. When you’re only in the city for a few days, being able to walk out the door and start sightseeing without worrying about much else is pretty hard to beat.

I’d lean toward a hotel if you:

  • are traveling as a couple
  • are staying for just a few nights
  • want a front desk and easy check-in
  • appreciate housekeeping and hotel amenities
  • want a luxury or full-service stay

The downsides:

  • rooms are usually smaller than apartments
  • you’ll have less space to spread out
  • luxury hotels can get expensive during peak season

When I’d Choose a Vacation Rental in Vienna

We actually stayed in an apartment on our first trip to Vienna because we were traveling with our two teenage daughters, and having separate bedrooms, a washing machine, and extra living space made a big difference.

We liked having that extra space enough that when we return to Vienna next summer, we’re choosing an apartment again.

If you’re traveling with kids, staying longer, or simply want more room to spread out, a vacation rental can make a lot of sense.

I’d lean toward a vacation rental if you:

  • are traveling with kids, family or friends
  • want separate bedrooms and more room to spread out
  • want a kitchen or washing machine
  • are staying for a longer trip

The downsides:

  • many apartments aren’t as central as hotels
  • cleaning fees can add up
  • check-in is often less convenient
  • support can be limited if something goes wrong

Traveling to Vienna with kids?

I’d compare vacation rentals before automatically booking two hotel rooms. Separate bedrooms, a kitchen and a washing machine made our first Vienna trip much easier with two teenagers—and we’re choosing an apartment again for our next trip.

Location Matters More Than Hotel vs. Vacation Rental

Before our trip to Vienna, I spent a lot of time comparing accommodations. I looked at photos, read reviews, and debated whether a hotel or an apartment would be the better choice.

Looking back, I realized I was asking the wrong question.

What made our trip so memorable wasn’t the type of accommodation we booked—it was where we stayed.

Every morning, we’d step outside, grab a coffee near St. Stephen’s Cathedral, and spend the day exploring on foot. We never felt like we were commuting into the city because we were already in it.

That’s why I think choosing the right neighborhood matters far more than choosing between a hotel and a vacation rental.

I’d happily stay in either, as long as it puts me within walking distance of the places I want to experience.

Common Mistakes When Choosing a Hotel or Vacation Rental in Vienna

1. Focusing on the Accommodation Instead of the Location

It’s easy to compare photos, amenities, and review scores, but the neighborhood you stay in will have a much bigger impact on your trip than whether you book a hotel or an apartment.

I’d rather stay in a simpler place in the right neighborhood than a luxury property that’s farther from everything I want to see.

2. Assuming a Vacation Rental Will Save You Money

A vacation rental isn’t always the cheaper option. Once you add cleaning fees and service charges, a well-located hotel can sometimes be the better value—especially for a couple or a shorter stay.

For a family, though, I’d compare the total cost of a vacation rental with the cost of booking the hotel rooms you’d actually need. That’s where having an apartment can start to make a lot more sense.

3. Booking Too Far from the Historic Center

Vienna has an excellent public transportation system, but if it’s your first visit, staying too far from the city center can mean spending more time commuting than exploring.

I think it’s worth paying a little more for a location where you can simply step outside and start your day.

4. Waiting Too Long to Book

The best hotels—and the best apartments—in central Vienna book up quickly, especially during Christmas market season, spring, and summer.

If you’ve found a place in a neighborhood you love, don’t wait too long to reserve it.

5. Choosing Based Only on Price

The cheapest option isn’t always the best value.

Sometimes spending a little more for a better location can completely change your experience. You’ll save time, walk more, and get to enjoy Vienna instead of commuting across it.

Booking Tips for Hotels and Vacation Rentals in Vienna

Whether you choose a hotel or a vacation rental, booking early will give you the best selection and prices.

If you’re visiting during the Christmas markets, spring, or summer, the most popular accommodations in central neighborhoods like Innere Stadt and Wieden often sell out months in advance.

Here are a few tips that have served me well:

  • Book as early as you can if you’re traveling during peak season.
  • Choose a refundable rate when possible. It gives you flexibility if your plans change or prices drop.
  • Compare the total price, not just the nightly rate. For vacation rentals, look at cleaning and service fees. For families considering a hotel, factor in whether you’d need one room or two.
  • Double-check the location on Google Maps before booking. A great neighborhood will have a bigger impact on your trip than a few extra hotel amenities.
  • Read the most recent reviews, especially for apartments, to make sure the listing still matches the photos and description.

If you find a well-reviewed place in a neighborhood that fits your travel style, I wouldn’t wait too long. The best options in Vienna tend to disappear quickly.

FAQ's

Is it better to stay in a hotel or Airbnb in Vienna?

For couples and shorter trips, I’d usually choose a hotel in Vienna. For families, groups, or longer stays, I’d consider a vacation rental for the extra bedrooms, kitchen, and laundry. Either way, I think location matters more than the type of accommodation you choose.

Are Vacation Rentals legal in Vienna?

Rules can vary by building and district. Always check the listing details and reviews, and confirm the host’s registration/compliance info.

What's the best area in Vienna if I choose a hotel?

Innere Stadt is the most convenient area for sightseeing, especially for a first visit. Nearby districts can offer better value while still keeping you close to the historic center.

What is the best area in Vienna for a vacation rental?

I’d still prioritize a central location. We loved being able to walk out of our apartment and explore Vienna on foot. Look for a vacation rental in or near Innere Stadt, or in a nearby neighborhood with easy access to the historic center.

Is a hotel or vacation rental better for families in Vienna?

For our family, a vacation rental worked really well. Traveling with two teenagers, we appreciated having separate bedrooms, a washing machine, and more room to spread out. We’re choosing an apartment again for our next Vienna trip.
