Plan Your Trip to Roatan: A Step-by-Step Planning Guide

Want to Travel to Roatan?

Let's Get Your Vacation Planned.

Flights. Hotels.  Transportation. eSIMs. Tickets. Itinerary.

I’ll walk you through the whole thing.

Plan Your Trip to Roatan

Everything you need to plan your Roatant trip—from where to stay and how to get there to airport transfers, tours, transportation, eSIMs, and more.

Planning a trip to Roatan sounds pretty simple.

Pick a resort, book a flight, throw a swimsuit in your suitcase and go.

Except Roatan is one of those places where where you stay can completely change your trip. West Bay and West End oare only a fe wmiles apart, but they’re very different vacations. Then there’s figuring out airport transportation, whether you  need a rental car, which tours are actually worth booking, where the best snorkeling is, and how much you really need to plan ahead.

This page is meant to fix that.

I’ve been traveling to Roatán for years. you just need to work your way through the steps.

We’ll start with your dates, then figure out where you should stay, how you’re getting there, what you should book ahead of time and how to put everything together into a trip that makes sense.

No 37-tab Roatan researach project required.

We’re Going to Plan This Trip Together

I’m going to walk you through your Roatán vacation from beginning to end, in the order I’d actually plan it myself.

I’ll help you decide where to stay, how to get there, what’s worth booking ahead, and where I’d spend the money—or save it.

And because Roatán works a little differently than a lot of Caribbean destinations, I’ll point out the things that can catch first-time visitors off guard.

By the time you reach the bottom of this page, your Roatán vacation should be planned.

01

STEP 1

Choose Your Roatán Dates

Before we book anything, let’s make sure you’re going at the right time.

You may already know exactly when you’re going. Perfect. But if your dates are flexible, Roatán changes quite a bit depending on the season — especially when it comes to rain, crowds, and prices.

For most people, I’d look hardest at February through May. You’re generally getting drier weather, plenty of sunshine, and great conditions for spending most of your trip in or around the water.

That said, I’ve been to Roatán at different times of year and there really isn’t one perfect month. Even during the wetter months, you can get beautiful stretches of weather. I’d choose your dates based on what matters most to you rather than trying to find a magical rain-free week.

MY PICK

February–May

Drier weather, lots of sunshine, and great conditions for beaches, snorkeling, and diving. This is when I’d look first.

ALSO GREAT

December–January

Warm weather and a popular time to escape winter. Expect more visitors and higher hotel prices around the holidays.

WETTER MONTHS

October–November

These tend to be among the rainier months. You can still have beautiful days, but I’d come prepared for less predictable weather.

SUMMER

Jun-August

Hot, tropical, and still a perfectly good time to visit. Great if summer is when your schedule allows you to go.

Already have your dates?

Great. Don’t overthink this part.

Roatán weather can be unpredictable no matter when you visit. If your dates are already set, I wouldn’t change a trip because the forecast shows rain. Tropical showers can come and go quickly.

Your next decision matters a lot more: where should you stay?

02

STEP 2

Get to Roatán

Flying directly to the island is usually the easiest option.

For most travelers coming from the U.S., I’d start by searching for flights directly into Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport (RTB). Depending on your dates, nonstop service is available from gateways including Miami, Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston and Atlanta, with additional seasonal routes.

If you can’t find a good flight all the way to RTB, don’t panic. You can also connect through mainland Honduras and take a short domestic flight to the island.

My preference? Fly into RTB if the price and schedule make sense. You land on Roatán, grab your bags, and you’re already on the island. One less connection is worth something to me on vacation.

EASIEST

Flying to RTB

Search flights directly into Roatán (RTB) first. If the price and schedule work, this is what I’d choose. You land on the island and your vacation starts.

Start with flights ↓

CAN’T FIND A GOOD RTB FLIGHT?

Try a Connection

Look at connecting through mainland Honduras and taking a short domestic flight to Roatán. I’d use this as Plan B if flying directly into RTB is too expensive or the schedule is terrible.

Flying Into Roatán?

If Roatán is your destination, start by searching for flights directly into Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport (RTB).

But don’t automatically assume the first route you find is your best option.

I’d compare a few different combinations of flights and connections. Depending on where you’re coming from, changing your connecting airport—or even booking the trip in separate pieces—can sometimes give you a much better schedule or price.

03

STEP 3

Choose Where to Stay in Roatán

West Bay or West End? This is the decision I’d make before booking a hotel.

Where you stay in Roatán matters more than you might expect. West Bay and West End are only a few miles apart, but they can feel like completely different vacations.

West Bay is where I’d look if you want a gorgeous beach, easy snorkeling, and more of a resort-style vacation.

West End is better if you want to walk to restaurants and dive shops and have more going on right outside your door.

I’ve stayed in both, and I don’t think one is universally better. The right choice really depends on how you want to spend your vacation.

WEST BAY

Beach + Resort

Beautiful beach, fantastic shore snorkeling and more full-service resorts.

WEST END

Walkable + Lively

Restaurants, bars, dive shops and a more local, walkable feel.

Unsure which area fits your travel style best?

I’ve broken down West Bay vs. West End, who each area works best for, the tradeoffs, and where I’d stay in each.

Already Know Which Area You Want?

Skip the West Bay vs. West End debate and go straight to the hotels I’d actually put on my shortlist.

TRAVELING WITH DIABETES?

Planning Roatán With Diabetes

I put together a separate Roatán guide with the practical things that can be harder to figure out before you arrive—where to find pharmacies and medical care, insulin storage, traveling with a CGM or pump, and what to know if something goes wrong.

04

STEP 4

Plan Your Arrival

Let’s get you from the airport to your hotel without figuring it out after you land.

Your hotel is booked. Now let’s figure out exactly how you’re getting there when you arrive.

This is one of those things I like to decide before a trip. After a long travel day, I don’t want to land, grab our luggage and then start negotiating transportation or figuring out where we’re supposed to go.

Roatán actually makes this pretty easy. If you’re flying into RTB, West End and West Bay are both a relatively short drive from the airport.

You basically have three choices: arrange transportation through your hotel, pre-book a private transfer, or take a taxi when you arrive.

EASIEST

Hotel Transfer

Ask your hotel whether airport transportation is included or can be arranged before you book anything separately.

MOST CONVENIENT

Pre-Booked Transfer

Have a driver waiting when you land. This is the option I like when I want arrival day completely handled.

FLEXIBLE

Taxi

Taxis are available for airport transportation, but confirm the fare before you leave.

BEFORE YOU LAND

√ Save your hotel’s address

√ Confirm your airport transportation

√ Have your hotel/transfer confirmation handy

√ Screenshot details in case of no cell service.

√ Check your hotel’s check-in time

√ Have a little cash available for arrival day

Do You Need a Rental Car in Roatán?

For most people staying in West Bay or West End, I wouldn’t automatically rent a car.

Both areas are fairly easy to get around once you’re there, and you can use taxis or arrange transportation when you want to go somewhere farther away.

A rental car starts making more sense if you’re staying outside the main tourist areas, want to explore the island independently, or know you’ll be making several trips back and forth.

For a first Roatán trip based in West Bay or West End? I’d probably skip it.

05

STEP 5

Get Your Phone to Work

Roaming, eSIMs and exactly what to set up before you leave.

You’re probably going to use your phone more than you think in Roatán—for directions, messaging your hotel or dive shop, looking up restaurants, checking tour details and figuring out where you’re going.

Wi-Fi is available at many hotels and restaurants, but I wouldn’t want to depend on Wi-Fi for the entire trip.

This is something I’d sort out before you leave home. You really have three options, and the best one depends on your phone plan and how much effort you want to put into saving money.

EASIEST

Use Your Carrier

Check whether your current plan includes Honduras or offers an international day pass.

Best for: You want your regular phone number and don’t mind paying for convenience.

MY PICK FOR MOST TRIPS

Use an eSIM

Buy a data plan before your trip and activate it on your phone when you’re ready to use it.

Best for: Easy data without paying your carrier’s daily international rate.

ANOTHER OPTION

Buy a Local SIM

Pick up a physical SIM after you arrive if your phone supports one and is unlocked.

Best for: Longer stays or travelers who need more local data.

BEFORE YOU LEAVE HOME

√ Check whether your phone supports eSIM

√ Download Roatán in Google Maps offline

√ Check your carrier’s roaming rates for Honduras

√Make sure your phone is unlocked if needed

√Download your eSIM app before leaving

√Save hotel and transportation information

What I'd Do

If my regular phone plan doesn’t already include international data at a reasonable price, I’d use an eSIM.

You can set it up before the trip, keep your regular SIM in your phone and have data ready when you arrive.

The part that can get confusing is the setup. Buying an eSIM is easy. Making sure your phone is actually using that data connection — and not quietly racking up roaming charges on your regular line — is the part worth doing carefully.

Using an eSIM?

I’ve already compared the options and put together a step-by-step guide that walks you through choosing one, installing it and the settings to check before you land.

Once your phone is handled, we’re onto the fun part: booking the Roatán experiences that are actually worth planning ahead.

06

STEP 6

Book Your Roatán Must-Dos

The things worth reserving before you leave — and what can wait.

Now we’re finally getting to the fun stuff.

You absolutely do not need to schedule every hour of your Roatán vacation before you leave. In fact, please don’t. This is an island where you want some room to decide that maybe today you’re doing absolutely nothing except snorkeling and sitting on the beach.

But there are a handful of things I’d decide on ahead of time — especially if diving, snorkeling or a specific excursion is high on your list.

The trick is knowing what I’d book before the trip and what I’d leave open.

I’D BOOK THESE FIRST

√ Snorkeling Tour

Roatán has incredible snorkeling right from shore, but a boat trip gets you to reefs and spots you wouldn’t reach on your own. If snorkeling is a priority, I’d book one good trip ahead.

√ Island Tour

If this is your first trip, an island tour is a good way to see more than West Bay and West End without renting a car.

√ Scuba Diving

If diving is one of the reasons you’re coming to Roatán, I’d contact a dive shop before the trip—especially if you want multiple dive days or have a particular shop in mind.

√ Boat Day / Catamaran

This is the splurge experience I’d consider if you want one bigger day on the water—especially for a family or group.

Then Choose One or Two Experiences

This is where I’d think about what will make Roatán feel like your trip.

You don’t need to book five tours. Honestly, part of the reason I love Roatán is that some of the best days don’t require much of a plan at all.

Pick one or two experiences you really want to do, book those, and leave yourself plenty of time for the beach, snorkeling, wandering West End—or deciding you’re not doing much of anything.

What Can Wait?

Not everything in Roatán needs a reservation. Leave yourself room for beach days, snorkeling from shore, wandering around West End, trying a restaurant someone recommends, or changing plans because everyone decides they’d rather stay in the water.

I’d book the experiences you’d be genuinely disappointed to miss. Everything else can have a little breathing room.

07

STEP 7

Plan Where to Eat

Because figuring out dinner when everyone is hungry is not my favorite vacation activity.

I don’t think you need restaurant reservations mapped out for every night in Roatán. But I do like knowing where I want to eat before we get there.

West Bay and West End have very different restaurant scenes, and some places are absolutely worth leaving your resort for.

My approach is pretty simple: save a handful of places that look good, know which ones are near where you’re staying, and decide as you go.

Staying in West Bay?

West Bay has plenty of places to eat without leaving the area, but I wouldn’t just default to your resort every night. There are some genuinely good restaurants worth walking to or making the short trip for.

Staying in West End?

You’ll have even more restaurants within walking distance. This is one of the reasons I like West End—you can head out for dinner without having much of a plan and see what sounds good.

08

STEP 8

Plan Your Roatán Days

Turn everything you’ve booked into a vacation that still feels like a vacation.

Now we have all the pieces. It’s time to put them together.

The biggest mistake I’d avoid here is trying to do too much. Roatán is not a trip where I want every morning, afternoon and evening scheduled.

Start with anything you’ve already booked for a specific day—a dive, snorkeling trip, island tour or boat day—and build around it.

Then leave some empty space. You’re going to want it.

THE RULE I USE

One planned thing + plenty of time in the water.

That’s usually enough structure to keep us from wasting the day without making a beach vacation feel scheduled.

BEACH DAY

West Bay + Snorkeling

Spend the morning on the beach, snorkel when you feel like it, grab lunch nearby and don’t plan much else.

ADVENTURE DAY

Diving, Snorkeling or Island Tour

This is where I’d put the excursion you booked ahead. Make that the main event instead of trying to squeeze three other things around it.

EXPLORE DAY

See More of Roatán

Get outside West Bay or West End. Explore more of the island, stop somewhere for lunch, and leave yourself time for anything you find along the way.

Build Around Your Reservations

Look at the things you’ve already booked and build your days around those.

If you have a dive scheduled in the morning, that’s the plan for that day. Add lunch, beach time or something easy afterward.

If your boat or island tour takes most of the day, let it. You don’t need to come back and cram another activity into the evening.

Build around the things that have a set time. Then let the rest of the trip stay flexible.

Don't Fill Every Minute

Some of my favorite time in Roatán has been the time we didn’t plan.

Leave room to snorkel a little longer, go back to a restaurant you loved, walk around West End, sit on the beach—or do absolutely nothing for a while.

You came to an island. Your itinerary is allowed to have blank spaces.

09

STEP 9

Pack & Go

The trip is planned. Now let’s make sure you don’t forget anything important.

At this point, the hard part is done.

Your flights are booked. You know where you’re staying. You’ve figured out how you’re getting from the airport to your hotel, your phone will work, and anything you really wanted to reserve is handled.

Now you just need to get yourself to Roatán.

MY ROATÁN DON’T-FORGET LIST

√ Passport

√ Reef-safe sunscreen

√ Prescription medications

√ Bug spray

√ Swimsuits – more than one

√ Portable phone charger

√ Credit card + some cash

√ Rashguard/sunshirt

Check the Weather Before You Pack

Roatán is tropical, which means sunshine and a rain shower can absolutely happen on the same day.

I wouldn’t obsess over the forecast weeks before your trip. A rainy-looking forecast does not necessarily mean you’re headed for a week of washouts.

Check it again a few days before you leave and adjust if needed. I’d pack for heat, sun and water—and throw in a lightweight rain layer just in case.

One Last Check Before You Leave

√ Confirm flight times

√ Download tour/transfer confirmations

√Charge your portable battery

√ Check in for your flight

√  Confirm airport transportation

√ Make sure you have any medications you need

And That's It.

You planned your Roatán trip.

Not just a list of things you might want to see someday. You figured out when to go, how to get there, where to stay, what to book and how your days are actually going to work.

Now stop researching Roatán.

Seriously. Close the tabs. You’re ready to go.
