Best Vacation Rentals in Roatán: Where to Stay & What to Know Before Booking

best vacation rentals in roatan

I’ve stayed in Roatán more times than I can count at this point, and we’ve done the island a few different ways.

On our most recent trip, we tried something a little different. Instead of booking directly through a resort, we rented a privately owned condo at Infinity Bay through VRBO.

And honestly? It gave us a little bit of both worlds.

We had the space and kitchen of a vacation rental, but we were still right on West Bay Beach with the pool, restaurants and everything else we love about staying at Infinity Bay.

But that trip also reminded me that booking a vacation rental in Roatán is very different from booking one in a typical beach destination.

Location matters. A lot.

A rental that looks absolutely incredible in photos may be somewhere you’ll want a car. Another might be within walking distance of restaurants and dive shops. And some of the most secluded properties on Roatán are actually reached primarily—or even only—by boat.

We met someone flying home from Roatán who had stayed in one of those more remote rentals. They had to take a boat pretty much everywhere.

They loved it.

I would not.

And that’s exactly why I wanted to write this guide.

I’m going to break down the best areas to look for vacation rentals in Roatán, who each area works for, and what I’d check before booking one.

Quick Answer: Where Should You Rent a Vacation Home in Roatán?

Area Best for
West Bay
First-time visitors & families
West End
Restaurants, diving & being able to walk places
Sandy Bay
More space & a quieter stay
East End
Seclusion & getting away from busiest areas
Boat-access properties
Travelers who REALLY want to get away from everything

Where would I stay? For our family, I’d still choose West Bay or West End most of the time. I like being able to walk out the door and have restaurants, diving and the beach nearby. If your idea of a perfect Roatán vacation is a secluded house where you barely see anyone else, I’d look farther east.

We Rented a Privately Owned Condo at Infinity Bay Through VRBO

For our most recent trip to Roatán, we stayed at Infinity Bay again—but this time we didn’t book directly through the resort.

We booked a privately owned condo through VRBO.

I’d already stayed at Infinity Bay before, so I knew we liked the location. It’s directly on West Bay Beach, close to restaurants, and the snorkeling right off the beach is one of the reasons we keep coming back to this part of Roatán.

But with four of us traveling, renting a condo gave us something I really wanted: more space.

What It Was Like Renting at Infinity Bay Through VRBO

We’ve stayed at Infinity Bay before, but on our most recent trip, we did things a little differently. Instead of booking directly through the resort, we rented one of the privately owned condos through VRBO.

For the most part, it felt just like our previous stays. We had full use of the pool and beach, and we were still in the same West Bay location we already knew we loved.

One difference was breakfast. When we booked directly through Infinity Bay in the past, breakfast was included. With our VRBO rental, it wasn’t.

Honestly, it wasn’t a big deal. We just went out for breakfast.

The bigger thing I’d pay attention to is the individual condo you’re booking.

Our condo was updated, clean and really well-kept. But because the condos at Infinity Bay are individually owned, they aren’t all the same. Some have been beautifully updated, while others are more dated.

So I wouldn’t see “Infinity Bay” on a VRBO listing and assume every condo is going to look like the one you saw in another listing.

Look closely at the photos and reviews for the exact unit you’re booking.

For us, renting through VRBO worked really well. We got the extra space of a condo while still having the pool, beach and location we wanted at Infinity Bay.

And with four of us traveling, I’d absolutely consider doing it this way again.

West End: Best for Restaurants, Diving and Walking Everywhere

do you need a rental car in roatan

If West Bay is the easy beach-vacation choice, West End feels a little more like you’re actually in Roatán.

This is one of my favorite areas of the island, especially if you like being able to walk to dinner, grab a drink, book a dive or wander around without planning every little thing in advance.

West End has tons of restaurants, bars, dive shops and smaller hotels packed along the waterfront and the main road. You’ll also find plenty of condos, apartments and vacation rentals tucked just off the main strip.

For a vacation rental, location within West End matters.

I’d personally want to be close enough to walk into town without needing a taxi every time we wanted dinner, but probably not directly above one of the busiest bars either.

That’s the sweet spot.

The beach here is also different from West Bay. If your main priority is having that big, beautiful Caribbean beach right outside your door, I’d choose West Bay.

But if you care more about restaurants, diving, nightlife and being able to walk places, I’d seriously consider West End.

My take: I’d choose West End over West Bay if my priority was being able to walk to restaurants and dive shops rather than having the best beach directly outside my rental.

Sandy Bay: Best for More Space and a Quieter Stay

Sandy Bay, roatan

Sandy Bay is worth looking at if you want something quieter than West Bay or West End but don’t necessarily want to disappear to the other side of the island.

You’ll find vacation homes and condos along this stretch of Roatán, and you can often get more space and privacy than you would in the busiest tourist areas.

But this is where I’d start paying much closer attention to the map.

A rental may technically be beachfront or close to the water, but that doesn’t mean you’ll be able to walk to restaurants, shops and everything else you need.

For some travelers, that’s exactly the point.

For me, I’d want to know how we’re getting around before I booked it.

If you’re renting a car anyway, Sandy Bay becomes much more appealing. If your plan is to walk everywhere for a week, I’d lean toward West End or West Bay instead.

My take: Sandy Bay makes sense if you want more space and quiet but still want relatively easy access to the busier western side of Roatán.

East End: Best for Getting Away From It All

This is where vacation rentals in Roatán start getting really interesting.

Head farther east and you can find gorgeous homes in much quieter parts of the island—sometimes with incredible water views, private docks and hardly another tourist around.

That sounds amazing.

Until I remember that I like going out to dinner.

On our flight home from Roatán, we talked to someone who had stayed in a much more secluded rental. They had to take a boat to get around.

And they loved it.

As they were describing it, I remember thinking that it sounded beautiful…and absolutely not how I want to spend my vacation.

That’s not a criticism. It’s actually the perfect example of why you need to think about location before booking a VRBO in Roatán.

If your dream trip involves a private house, quiet mornings, snorkeling, reading and feeling like you’ve escaped everyone, a remote rental could be incredible.

If you want to decide at 6:30 that you’re hungry and walk somewhere for dinner, maybe not.

My take: I’d absolutely consider the East End for a quiet getaway, but I’d want to understand transportation, grocery access and restaurants before clicking Book.

Boat-Access Rentals: Amazing for the Right Person

Some of the most secluded vacation rentals in Roatán are accessible primarily by boat.

These can be incredible if you’re looking for privacy, water views and a completely different experience from staying in West Bay or West End. But I’d pay very close attention to the logistics before booking.

Find out how you’ll get to and from the property, whether transportation is included, how you’ll get groceries, and what happens when you want to go out for dinner or explore another part of the island.

I’d also check how weather affects boat transportation and whether there’s an alternative way to reach the property if needed.

For some travelers, taking a boat everywhere sounds like part of the adventure.

For me, it’s probably a little too secluded.

My take: Don’t rule these rentals out, but understand exactly what “remote” means before you book. A gorgeous waterfront house isn’t much of a bargain if you spend the entire trip frustrated by the location.

What to Check Before Booking a VRBO in Roatán

This is probably more important in Roatán than in a lot of destinations I’ve visited.

Before booking, I would check:

  • Exact location: Don’t rely on the general area listed in the title. Look at where you’ll actually be staying.
  • Transportation: Can you walk anywhere? Will you need a rental car, taxi or boat?
  • Restaurants: How easily can you get to dinner?
  • Groceries: If you’re renting a house specifically because you want a kitchen, figure out where you’ll actually buy groceries.
  • Beach access: “Oceanfront” and “great ocean views” don’t necessarily mean there’s a swimmable beach outside.
  • Air-conditioning: Check whether the entire rental is air-conditioned or only certain bedrooms.
  • Power and water: Read recent reviews for mentions of outages and ask what backup systems the property has.
  • Internet: If you need reliable Wi-Fi, don’t assume it just because the listing says Wi-Fi is available.
  • Property condition: Pay attention to reviews for the specific unit, especially in condo developments with individually owned units.
  • What’s included: Resort amenities, breakfast, housekeeping and other perks may be different when renting privately.

That last one surprised us a little at Infinity Bay. We still had full use of the pool and beach, but breakfast—which had been included when we’d stayed there previously—wasn’t included with our privately owned condo.

It wasn’t a problem. We just went out.

But it’s a good example of why I wouldn’t assume that renting a condo located inside a resort automatically comes with everything you’d receive by booking directly through the resort.

Do You Need a Car if You Rent a Vacation Home in Roatán?

Not necessarily.

If you’re staying in West Bay or West End and choose your rental carefully, you may be able to walk to restaurants, beaches and dive shops and use taxis or water taxis when you want to go somewhere farther away.

Once you start looking at vacation rentals outside those areas, transportation becomes a much bigger part of the decision.

This is why I wouldn’t fall in love with a house first and figure out the logistics later.

A gorgeous rental with a private pool and incredible ocean views can look like a steal compared with something in West Bay. But if you need transportation every time you want groceries, dinner or a day at the beach, that’s part of the cost and the experience too.

My biggest advice is to choose the kind of Roatán vacation you want first, then choose the area, and finally choose the rental.

For us, being able to easily get to restaurants, diving and the beach matters more than having the most secluded house on the island.

If you want more details on taxis, water taxis, rental cars and actually getting around the island, I have a full guide to getting around Roatán here.

Is a Roatán Vacation Rental Better Than a Resort?

I don’t think one is automatically better.

After doing Roatán both ways, I’d choose based on the trip.

A vacation rental makes a lot of sense if you’re traveling with a family or group and want more bedrooms, a kitchen and some actual living space. It can also open up parts of Roatán where there aren’t many traditional hotels.

A resort can be easier. You may have restaurants, housekeeping, breakfast, activities and someone at the front desk when you need something.

Our Infinity Bay stay was somewhere in the middle.

We had the space and kitchen of a privately owned condo, but we still had the pool, beach and location of a resort.

For our family, that combination worked really well.

Where to Search for Vacation Rentals in Roatán

Once you know which part of Roatán fits your trip, I’d narrow your search to that area instead of looking at the entire island at once.

For us, I’d start with West Bay or West End because we like being close to restaurants, diving and the beach. But if you’re looking for more space and quiet, Sandy Bay or the East End may make more sense.

When you’re comparing rentals, remember that two properties that look similar online can give you completely different vacations simply because of where they’re located.

FAQs About Vacation Rentals in Roatán

Is VRBO a good option in Roatán?

Yes. There are vacation rentals throughout Roatán, from condos in popular areas like West Bay and West End to private homes in much quieter parts of the island.

We’ve personally rented a privately owned condo at Infinity Bay through VRBO and had a great experience. The key is paying attention to the specific property and its location, rather than choosing based on photos alone.

What is the best area of Roatán for a vacation rental?

For most first-time visitors, I’d start with West Bay or West End.

West Bay is my pick if having a beautiful beach nearby is the priority. West End is better if you want to walk to restaurants, bars and dive shops.

Sandy Bay can be a good option if you want something quieter, while rentals farther east make more sense for travelers looking for a more secluded trip.

Do I need a rental car if I stay in a VRBO in Roatán?

Not always.

If you stay in the right part of West Bay or West End, you may be able to walk quite a bit and use taxis or water taxis when needed.

For rentals farther away from the main tourist areas, I’d figure out transportation before booking. Depending on the property, you may need a rental car, regular taxis or even boat transportation.

Are vacation rentals in Roatán safe?

The location and individual property matter more than whether you’re staying in a vacation rental or hotel.

I’d read recent reviews carefully, look at the property’s security features and make sure you understand exactly where the rental is located before booking.

If you’re unfamiliar with the island, this is another reason I like West Bay and West End for a first visit.

Can you stay at a Roatán resort through VRBO?

Sometimes.

That’s exactly what we did at Infinity Bay. We rented a privately owned condo through VRBO but still had access to the pool and beach.

Just don’t assume every privately owned condo includes the same things you’d receive by booking directly through the resort. For example, breakfast had been included during one of our previous Infinity Bay stays, but it wasn’t included with our VRBO rental.

Check the individual listing so you know exactly what’s included.

Is it cheaper to stay in a vacation rental than a hotel in Roatán?

Sometimes, but I wouldn’t assume it will be.

Vacation rentals can be especially appealing for families and groups because you may get multiple bedrooms, a kitchen and more living space for your money.

But compare the total cost, including cleaning and service fees, against the hotel or resort you’re considering.

Is Airbnb or VRBO better for Roatán?

I wouldn’t choose based on the booking platform alone.

I’d compare the actual rentals available for your dates, their location, recent reviews, cancellation terms and total price. We’ve personally used VRBO in Roatán, so that’s the experience I can speak to firsthand.

Final Thoughts on Renting a Vacation Home in Roatán

I can see why vacation rentals are so popular in Roatán.

You can have more space, a kitchen, incredible views and sometimes a completely different experience than you’d get staying at a traditional resort.

For our family, renting a privately owned condo at Infinity Bay worked really well. We had the extra space we wanted without giving up the West Bay location, pool or beach.

But I wouldn’t choose a Roatán rental based on the house alone.

Choose the area first.

That gorgeous house on the other side of the island might be perfect if your idea of vacation is privacy, quiet and hardly seeing another person. I know myself well enough to know that after about two days, I’d be wondering where we were going for dinner.

That’s why I’d happily trade a little seclusion for being able to walk to the beach, restaurants and dive shops.

Figure out what you want your Roatán vacation to actually look like, choose the part of the island that gives you that, and then start looking at vacation rentals.

Because in Roatán, the location may matter even more than the house.
