I’ve been to Roatan more than 10 times, and if there’s one thing I can tell you—it’s that where you stay will completely shape your trip. Every photo in this guide is from our own trips to Roatán, so what you see is exactly what you can expect.

Most people visiting Roatan end up choosing between West Bay and West End — but honestly, they feel like two completely different vacations.

West Bay is all turquoise water, soft white sand, frozen drinks, and “should we just stay another week?” energy.

West End is more barefoot divers, waterfront bars, slightly chaotic island charm, and people who came for vacation sometime around 2018 and mysteriously never left.

Neither is wrong.

It just depends whether your ideal vacation vibe is:

“luxury Caribbean relaxation”

or

“I might accidentally become a scuba instructor.”

If you don’t want to overthink it, I’ll break down exactly where to stay in Roatan based on your travel style—plus the hotels that are actually worth booking.

If this is your first trip to Roatan, here are the things I wish I’d known before visiting.

Roatan is small, but staying in the wrong area can make getting around frustrating—so it’s worth getting this right.

If you’re wondering where to stay in Roatán, I’d narrow it down to West Bay or West End for most first-time visitors. West Bay is my pick for beaches, snorkeling, families and an easy resort vacation, while West End is better for diving, restaurants, nightlife and a more laid-back island feel.

If you’re already thinking about hotels, I’ve also put together guides to the best hotels in West Bay and the best hotels in West End to help narrow down your options.

Don’t want to read the full guide? No problem! Here are my top hotel/resort picks. Choose any of them, and you’ll be set!

If you’re putting your whole trip together, my Plan a Trip to Roatán guide walks you through everything step by step, from where to stay to what to book before you go.

BEST AREA TO STAY IN ROATAN

paddle boarding in west bay beach roatan

If you’re visiting Roatán for the first time, I usually recommend staying in West Bay. It has the island’s best beach, calm turquoise water, excellent snorkeling right from shore, and many of Roatán’s top-rated beachfront resorts.

West End may be a better fit if you prefer dive shops, local restaurants, waterfront bars, and a more social, laid-back atmosphere.

For most first-time visitors, I recommend West Bay. For repeat visitors, scuba divers, and travelers who enjoy a livelier island vibe, West End is often the better choice.

Still deciding where to stay once you’ve picked an area? Take a look at my guides to the Best Hotels in West Bay and the Best Hotels in West End to find the right hotel for your trip.

🌴First Trip to Roatán?

Avoid the mistakes we made and plan a better Roatán vacation with my free planning kit.

GETTING BETWEEN WEST BAY & WEST END

  • 🚕 Taxi: about 10–15 minutes
  • 🚤 Water taxi: about 15 minutes (great for dinner or sunset).  Approx. $5 per person.
  • 🚗 Rental car: not necessary for most visitors staying in either area

CAN YOU VISIT BOTH?

Absolutely—and I actually recommend it.

Most visitors choose one area as their home base and then spend time exploring the other. We usually stay in West Bay for the beach and snorkeling, then take the water taxi to West End for dinner, drinks, or an evening walk. Since they’re only about 10–15 minutes apart, it’s easy to enjoy both without changing hotels.

West Bay: Best Area to Stay in Roatán for Beaches, Resorts & First-Time Visitors

Beautiful clear turquoise waters in Roatan, perfect for snorkeling and relaxing beach days.

West Bay is the version of Roatan that ruins your expectations for normal beaches forever afterward. Seriously, every time I look at a tropical vacation, this beach is what they all are compared to.

The water is so aggressively turquoise it barely looks real, and the snorkeling directly off the beach is the kind of thing that makes grown adults point excitedly at fish-like toddlers at an aquarium. If snorkeling is one of the main reasons you’re visiting, check out my guide to the Best Snorkeling in Roatán to see exactly where to go.

It’s polished, easy, beautiful, and honestly the least stressful Caribbean vacation setup imaginable.

This is the easiest place to stay in Roatan. Everything is walkable, the beach is beautiful, and you don’t need to think too much about logistics. Which, personally, I deeply appreciate while on vacation because my normal life already contains enough logistical decision-making to qualify as a part-time job. If you’re leaning toward West Bay, I’ve also rounded up the best hotels in West Bay Roatán for every budget, including several places we’ve stayed over the years.

If your dream vacation includes upscale resorts, incredible beaches, fine dining, and easy access to snorkeling and dive shops, I don’t think you’ll regret staying in West Bay. It’s the classic Caribbean postcard experience.

Is West Bay worth the higher prices?

In my opinion, yes—especially if it’s your first trip to Roatán. You’re paying for the island’s best beach, excellent snorkeling right from shore, and the convenience of having everything within walking distance. If your budget allows, I think it’s worth the extra cost for the overall experience.

I love this place so much that it’s going to be hard to condense my thoughts on the subject, but I’ll try!

Is it touristy? Sure, but not as much as most Caribbean destinations that I’ve travelled to.

Is it crowded? On days where cruise ships stop and tourists make their way over, then it’s busier. But wherever you stay, your beachfront and chairs are usually reserved just for you. They may have some loungers that tourists can reserve for the day, but the resorts try to take care of the people staying with them first.

💡My Tip: Don’t judge West Bay by a cruise ship day.

I’ve been here on both cruise ship days and quiet days, and they feel completely different. If you’re staying in West Bay for a week, don’t let one busy afternoon worry you. Early mornings and evenings are much quieter and are my favorite times to enjoy the beach.

Is the water cold, cloudy or rough? This is the only place on Earth that I’ve visited where the water is about 80 degrees year-round and so clear, you can see at least 50-100 feet down. And, since it’s a bay, it is protected from rough sea. What’s you’re left with is a crystal blue paradise where you can actually hang out in the water.

Is the beach rocky or full of seaweed?  Nope, the beach is super-soft, white sand. There is seaweed that comes ashore, but the resorts work every day to keep it picked up. They also rake the sand to keep the sand flies and other bugs away.

What is there to do? There are tons of things to do in Roatán, whether you’re staying in West Bay or West End. Most resorts have beautiful pools if you’d rather skip the sand, but if you love being on the water, you’ll find everything from snorkeling and scuba diving to parasailing, fishing, and sunset cruises. I cover all of my favorites in my guide to the Best Things to Do in Roatán.

If you’ve ever thought about getting scuba certified, Roatán is one of the easiest places in the world to learn. I was honestly nervous before my first dive, but it ended up becoming one of my favorite travel experiences. Here’s what it was really like getting scuba certified in Roatán.

Who Should Stay in West Bay?

Stay here if you:

You may prefer West End if you:

  • You enjoy nightlife and waterfront bars
  • You prefer a more local, laid-back atmosphere
  • You’re traveling on a tighter budget

READY TO BOOK YOUR HOTEL IN WEST BAY?

I've narrowed down the best hotels in West Bay—from luxury beachfront resorts to budget-friendly stays.

West End: Best Area to Stay in for Nightlife, Diving, and a Local Island Feel

best-hotels-in-west-end-roatan

Half Moon Bay, West End, Roatan

Vibrant Roatan street scene with tourists exploring shops and palm trees in the background.

West End is Roatán’s main tourist town, known for its laid-back atmosphere, lively nightlife, excellent restaurants, and some of the island’s best scuba diving and snorkeling around Half Moon Bay.

It’s incredibly easy to explore because there’s really just one main road lined with:

  • Dive shops
  • Waterfront bars
  • Local restaurants
  • Gift shops
  • Coffee spots
  • And sunburned tourists trying to remember whether they’re on their second margarita or fourth.

Half Moon Bay is the heart of West End. It’s a beautiful place to swim, snorkel, or watch dive boats come and go, but it isn’t the long stretch of powdery white sand you’ll find in West Bay. Instead, it has a more lived-in, colorful Caribbean feel that’s part of its charm.

If you’re interested in snorkeling around Half Moon Bay, check out my guide to the Best Snorkeling in Roatán to see what to expect.

West End feels less like a resort destination and more like a quirky island community that just happens to be one of the best dive towns in the Caribbean.

One of the biggest differences between West Bay and West End is the evenings. West Bay tends to quiet down after dinner, while West End stays livelier with restaurants, waterfront bars, live music, and people strolling through town. If you enjoy going out after the sun sets, West End has much more to offer.

Is West End safe? We’ve always felt comfortable walking around West End during the day and in the evenings around the main tourist area, using the same common-sense precautions you’d use anywhere.

It’s lively, social, a little chaotic, and full of the kind of people who say, “I only planned to stay for two weeks.” Right before explaining why they’ve now lived there for seven years.

If you’re the kind of traveler who’d rather walk to a local coffee shop than spend the day at an all-inclusive resort, you’ll probably feel right at home here.

Thinking West End might be the better fit? I’ve rounded up my favorite places to stay in my guide to the Best Hotels in West End.

Who Should Stay in West End?

Stay here if you:

  • Plan to scuba dive or snorkel every day
  • Love walking to restaurants, bars, and coffee shops
  • Prefer boutique hotels over large beachfront resorts
  • You want to stretch your budget without giving up a great location.
  • You enjoy strolling to dinner, grabbing drinks, and being out in the evenings.
  • Have already visited Roatán and want to experience a different side of the island

You may prefer West Bay if you:

  • It’s your first trip to Roatán
  • You want the island’s best beach right outside your hotel
  • You’re traveling with young children
  • You’re looking for a luxury resort vacation
  • You want to spend all day lounging on a wide sandy beach

Best Roatan beach for kids

My Honest Opinion After 10+ Trips to Roatan

If it’s your first trip to Roatán and you want an easy, beautiful Caribbean vacation, stay in West Bay.

It’s popular for a reason.

But if you’re the kind of traveler who values personality over polish—and doesn’t mind things feeling a little more local and unpredictable—West End has a way of winning people over.

Personally?

I genuinely love both. They just offer completely different vacations.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

West Bay is the best area to stay in Roatan for most travelers because of its beaches, clear water, and resort-style hotels. West End is a better choice if you want a more local, social vibe.

West Bay is better for beaches and luxury resorts, while West End is better for restaurants, nightlife, and diving. Many travelers visit both during their stay.

Most travelers spend 4–7 days in Roatan to enjoy the beaches, snorkeling, diving, and excursions without feeling rushed.

The water is typically calm, warm, and shallow near the shore, making it easy for kids to splash and swim without constantly fighting waves. The soft white sand is perfect for building sandcastles, and many of the resorts have pools, restaurants, and restrooms just steps from the beach.

One of my favorite things about West Bay is that you don’t have to pack up the family and drive somewhere to snorkel. Older kids can often spot colorful fish just a short swim from shore, while parents can relax knowing everything they need is within walking distance.

The only thing to keep in mind is that parts of the reef come fairly close to shore. Water shoes can be helpful for younger kids, especially if they like exploring near the rocks, and it’s always a good idea to keep an eye out for boats and water taxis operating along the beach.

If you’re visiting Roatán with children, I’d choose West Bay over West End every time. It simply offers the easiest, most relaxing beach experience for families.

Yes, sharks live in the waters around Roatán, but seeing one while swimming or snorkeling at West Bay Beach is extremely rare.

Roatán is surrounded by the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, which is home to a healthy marine ecosystem that includes reef sharks such as nurse sharks and Caribbean reef sharks. These sharks typically stay around deeper reefs and are not interested in people swimming near the beach.

I’ve visited Roatán more than 10 times, spent countless hours snorkeling and scuba diving, and have never seen a shark while swimming at West Bay Beach. In fact, you’re much more likely to spot colorful tropical fish, sea turtles, eagle rays, or spotted eagle rays than any shark.

However, for the first time ever, on my most recent trip, I saw a nurse shark while scuba diving. It was exciting for us to see, but the shark couldn’t have cared less about us.

If you do go on a scuba diving excursion to deeper reef sites, your dive guide may point out a reef shark in the distance—but that’s considered a special sighting, not something to worry about.

For the vast majority of visitors, sharks aren’t something that should influence where you choose to stay or whether you enjoy the water at West Bay Beach.

Don’t Wait to Book

Roatán has become much more popular over the past few years, especially in West Bay. The best beachfront hotels often book up months in advance, and prices tend to climb as availability disappears.

If you find a hotel you love, I’d book it sooner rather than later. Choose the right option and you can always cancel later.

Ready to Book Your Stay?

Roatán is one of those rare places that actually lives up to the photos. The water really is that clear, the snorkeling really is that good, and the island somehow manages to feel both relaxing and adventurous at the same time.

Whether you choose West Bay or West End, I don’t think you’ll regret visiting.

Now all that’s left is finding the hotel that’s the right fit for your trip.
